I have been wondering about who's "minding the store", especially recruit wise, and also the current roster of guys.

You would hope that something could be in place as the State Games, Showcase ball and Legion season is going on. Whoever gets the job will want to get right on the recruiting trail.

I saw Coach Smith "recruiting" at our legion games this past weekend. Asheville vs. Shelby. Well he at least had his stopwatch in hand.

may have been timing how long it takes to make a dog "all the way"!

Coach Smith would be very valuable to the program in any capacity with his connections in western NC.

    Coach Ski

Former Niagara University head coach and former App State assistant Chris Chernisky is looking to return back to the area. Many would like to see him return.

Whomever takes the job will have to be a "jack of all trades" type coach.

First of all, he'll have to rejuvenate and build some excitement/enthusiasm with the players he inherits. Obviously, with the way this past season went, and then the staff leaving, the guys ain't real sure about the situation. In talking to some of them, there is a belief that there is some talent on the team, it just needs to be re-focused.

He's going to have to make a "silk purse out of a sow's ear" when it comes to facilities. The administration "says" that improvements are coming... but it's going to be a while... and the present economy is going to push that further back... unless there's a "sugar daddy" out there!

He's going to have to actively recruit. UNC-A isn't the size program where a head coach can afford to turn over recruiting to someone else. It's his program and he'll sink or swim with how he builds it.

Stop and think people. Who is left on this staff from 2 years ago? A big snake in the grass up there. Coaches were warned, they didn't heed the warning.

My biggest fear was that they would drop the program. From what I understand though, they can't do that and remain a Div. 1 school.

Mudcat, I assume the "warning" you're talking about is winning. In fairness to the former staff, they did schedule pretty tough non-conference opponents and they did have to recruit with the least desirable facilities of all the state supported D-1 North Carolina schools. I would imagine their budget has always been lean due to funding based on such a small student population and limited alumni support... besides what Ty Wiggington has done.

I hope the new staff will continue the non-conference scheduling against high level opponents, but they will have to greatly improve the winning percentage in conference to get themselves the funding to improve the facilities and the program overall.
