You've seen this happen a million times. A batter checks his swing and the plate ump calls it a ball. The catcher asks for an appeal to the base ump and he either confirms or overrules the call. Presumably, the base ump has a better view/angle to make that call correctly.

How about when the batter checks his swing and the plate ump calls it a swinging strike? Is there ever a situation when the batter can appeal to the base ump? Doesn't the base ump still have the better view/angle to make that call correctly?

I know I've never seen this occur, but it seems like a double standard. Must be a good explanation for this though.

I don't know if there is a rule or not, but I would suspect that the field ump would never overrule the HP Umps call on the swing. In the case where the catcher appeals it is because the HP ump didn't see the swing or couldn't tell if the hitter went past the plate. When the HP ump calls the swing one has to presume that he saw the bat travel past the plate.

Yep..you can't appeal a HP umpires call on a check swing if he called it a strike. Kinda hypocritical, but that's the rule.

Several points to make here. -A called strike is a strike. Can't be changed. -A player can never appeal, only ask the umpire to appeal. -One umpire cannot overturn his partners call. They can consult and if the partner presents his rule interpretation well enough the umpire may change his call. -The check swing has nothing to do with the bat crossing the plate or wrist breaking. The rule is did the batter attempt to hit the ball.
