OK i have been pitching for 8 years and one day i was fooling around one day and decided to see if i could throw a pitch under my leg and it worked!! plus can be very effective!

    how its thrown:

    -startoff with regular motion
-steping forward as usuall with your back foot
    -shortening your stride slightly
-your arm is coming around while staying in the same plane as it would on a normal pitch
-when your arm gets a bout 3/4 of the way quickly lift your plant leg(pushoff foot)
-then let your lower arm hit the back of your hip/under your thigh thus makeing your wrist snap and the ball to fly straight

summing the pitch up basicly all you do is lift your leg instead of leaving it down

its very similar to the drill where you are down on one knee and snap the ball under your leg

please tell me what you think of this pitch it has caused some big stink in USFA , every time it has been called illegel the umpires have never told me why just that i cant do it.

i really like this pitch and has been very effective so far please help me out.

welcome softballaholic to this board rocks softball forum......we had the same problem with the turnaround pitch at the nsa state some years ago. i believe that because its out of the ordinary, they call it illegal no matter what. they also couldnt explain to us why it was illegal. i'm sure that one of our knowledgable umpire type members will respond and if legal, possibly give you some reasons to back up your arguement next time.

Pivot foot has to stay in contact with the ground till the ball is released so yes it is illegal

"10.6.4 The release of the ball and follow-through of the hand and wrist must
be forward and past the straight line of the body."

I guess one could say the pitch does not follow the above rule from the 2008 NCAA rule book, but this is about the only rule I see that may make it illegal.

    crazy

yea its caused a big stink and the directors have been complaining about its pretty funny though to witness everyones exspressions and comments when i throw it. ive thrown it a total of aout ten times obviously when theres two outs and no one on so the worse thing they can do is call it a ball but about 5/10 times they called it illegel so im going to keep throwing it for fun and see what happens. i dont know if i will throw it in showcases but for double elimination its always funny Thanks!

Yea i deffinitly dont plan to throw it in school or college but for little local USFA of WFC and local things like that i dont see why they are making it so much of a big deal

There is a pitcher down here who has thrown that pitch as her final warm up pitch on every inning for a while. A lot of people don't even notice.

If the pivot foot leaves the ground before you release the ball then that's an illegal pitch.

In ASA, Rule 6 Fast Pitch, Section 3F (added in 2007) is pretty clear on this:

USFA and WFC rulebooks are kind of spare. I don't see anything in the USFA or WFC rulebooks prohibiting this. OTOH the WFC says that the "slip" (aka California Change up) pitch is legal while prohibiting a revolution of the arm after releasing the pitch (a characteristic of the pitch), so I don't take it too seriously.
