Just curious on what other people think.
    What makes a good pitcher?
Is it the number of strikeouts they get a game.
Or the number of homeruns that they allow.

I was reading an article today about how
if a pitcher strikes out 10 batters, thats 11 outs the defense has to get.
If you have no defense, than obviously the other team scores run.
With that being said does a good defense make a good pitcher.
How do you classify one pitcher better than the other?
Just something i thought would give you something to think about.

A good pitcher has a variety of pitches, control of her pitches, speed around 60 mph, endurance, emotional stability.

When a pitcher has all that then it becomes a matter of the skill level of whoever is calling pitches and the skill level of the defense. A good pitcher will be able to place the pitches so that the batter will hit the ball somewhat predictably to the defense. A good pitcher will get a lot of strikeouts but when facing a good batter they need to be able to get the batter to swing at high percentage out pitches.

    Easy

MENTALLY TOUGH and can throw strikes that move that are NOT down the middle of the plate.

Isn't much more complicated than that....

A good pitcher is one who can deny the offense good hits.

    What makes a good pitcher

All good responses. Remember, ALL great pitchers that have pitched before you, had great defenses. Remember that a pitcher's job is to force the offense to hit the ball. Strike outs will come, but walks will kill; especially late in games. There is also a diffence between a "pitcher" and a
"thrower". Speed is not as important as control and movement. But all great pitchers will get hit, by great hitters. And all great hitters will fail the majority of the time. good luck!!

I know some that would argue that, BUT I'm not one of them.

Here's what one of the leading TB coaches in NC sent me . . .

after the Dynamites tournament a few weeks ago. We were discussing the fact that there was little 'shut down' pitching there.

TALKED TO 4 D-1 COACHES THIS WEEKEND....ASKED THEM WHAT ARE THEY were LOOKING FOR IN A PITCHER WHEN RECRUITING. SIZE OF THE PLAYER....LOOKING FOR TALL AND "BEEFED-UP".... 61MPH AND UP 90% OF THE TIME......SPIN ON THE BALL....HIT THEIR SPOTS.....LOOKING FOR STRIKEOUTS....PUSHING HARD OFF THE RUBBER.....2 COACHES TOLD ME THAT IF WE WERE PLAYING A TOP NOTCH TEAM, THEY WANT TO SEE A STRiKEOUT PER INNING, 2 SOME INNINGS, GROUND BALLS, THEY ARE WATCHING HARD HIT BALLS..

Reinforces what worked very well for my DD . . . "throw down, throw hard and keep it in the yard". Too many girls trying to be rise ball pitchers for my liking. May work in HS (weak hitters swing at balls in their eyes) but in D1 an average rise ball is a HR waiting to happen.

Throw down and average 7/8 K's per game and get a couple of 'come-backers' (this will happen if you're down) and you've accounted for 10-11 outs in the circle. Only leaves the defense 1/2 games work. Strikeouts are essential as too balls put in play will invariably find some holes.

the most powerfull statements are most often brilliant in their simplicity and this is one of them... very true John.

Tom Seaver was once asked what his secret was to pitching. He said: "its not complicated ... up and in... low and away"
