Mooresville went from 7th or 8th to 3rd with that 2 game sweep of Wilkes on the last day of the regular season.

In recent years, the Area 3 South has been known as a league with several contenders and usually strong on a nightly basis with 6-7-8 very good legion programs where you had better "bring it" every night.

To be honest (about this year), Rowan County clearly separated themselves from the rest of the league (IMO), and South Rowan probably established themselves as clearly the 2nd best,,, but 3-9 were pretty even (which is a good thing). Its really not surprising to me that you had so many teams bunched up in the standings.

Best example, #9 Kannapolis (who didn't even make playoffs) swept both the #2 and #4 teams during regular season.

Baseball,,, funny game sometimes, other times not so funny.

Rowan opens the Area III playoffs with a victory against Mocksville behind the arm of ace Corbin Shive. Zach Smith hit a three-run homer to make the biggest difference in the game for Rowan. That shot gave the home team a 6-2 lead and some breathing room for Shive after Mocksville rallied to tie the score at 2-2. Rowan added their other run on an RBI groundout. Fairly well played game, both fans complained about (the ump) Mr. Notourious Dirk "You Better" Swing behind the plate. Swing is consistent, just not consistently good. He gets in a lot of player's heads. Zach Russell-Myers was ejected late in the contest for arguing balls and strikes after Swing had rung him up. Rowan came out and took care of business tonight in a very workman-like approach. They didn't score 15 runs, they just did what they needed to do to win. Rowan is home again Saturday night in round one of the best-of-three playoff series leading 1-0. Billy Veal should get the nod for Post 342.

Connor Scarbrough pitched a 3 hit shutout, striking out 9 in 8 innings. Kyle Brandenburg gave him the only run he needed with an RBI single in the first but then made sure of it with a three run homer in the third. Kyle was 3-4 on the night with the 4 RBIs. Played some great defense at third too.

Winston never got on track tonight. Ran themselves out of a good inning early when two men got caught in run downs. They hit Scarbrough hard late but his defense held up behind him. Score was 4-0 in the eight when Alex Walters led off with a triple then scored on a bunt single to start off a three run eighth.
