Third riund of Area I Play

Cary wins 14 - 12 in a fairly sloppy game made worse by the umpires.

The score that was reported to my from Rocky Mt. was that rocky Mt. won 31 - 5. Tomorrow night in Fleming.

I feel like we gave away this game with really sloppy defensive play. We had our chances, but couldn't hang on. My guys have nothing to hang their heads about, but I am very disappointed in not advancing.

Good luck to Cary in the next round and beyond.

Durham finishes 21-8 overall. I would like to thank the following players for their efforts this season:

    Tyler Robinson (4 years)
    Lee Murray (3 years)
    Robert Long (3 years)
    Bill Sanders (2 years)
    Eric Backus (2 years)
    Ari Seelinger (2 years)
    Zach Bernard
    Alex McClure

    Rocky Mount 32, Wilson 5 (7)

Facing elimination, Rocky Mount Post 58 scores 22 runs in the 3rd inning and drills 6 HRs -- three by leadoff man T.J. Taylor -- in handing Wilson Post 13 its largest-ever margin of defeat and runs allowed. Wilson still leads the series 2-1 headed back to Fleming Stadium on Thursday.

32 to 5. You had to be there!

OK. I was at the game last night and here’s what happened. Wilson did not get the memo that the 3rd game would be a football contest and showed up unprepared. Wilson was not able to contain the rushing and passing attack of Nash Post 58 and Nash was able to score 4 touchdowns and convert all 4 (2) point conversions. Wilson was only able to score a mercy safety ( Nash Co. Player tackled his own team mate in his own endzone on purpose) and a field goal that hit both sides of the goal posts and cross bar and trickled over (I think). Ump gave it to us anyway out of pity!

I’m constantly bombarded by phone calls during the games wanting to know the score. When I tell them Wilson is down 23 to 1 in the 3rd, I get the expected response "No, really, what’s the score"? I tell them again and I get the same response. Finally, I have to swear on my children’s life that the score is correct. If I had not been there, I’m not sure I would have believed it.

    It went something like this:

walk, walk, home run, hit, hit, error, hit batter, walk, hit, home run, pitcher change, walk, hit, home run, hit, hit, error, (did I mention hit?), hit, home run, hit, hit batter, walk, pitcher change, home run, (did I mention home run?), etc., etc., etc. And that’s just the 3rd inning.

In the spirit of a good friend of mine’s life long philosophy that the glass is always "half full" as opposed to "half empty", here’s my attempt to look on the bright side and put a positive spin on a 32 to 5 butt kicking:

1- In all probability, Wilson will never lose this bad again. Not saying it can’t happen, but the odds are against it.
2- Some of our pitcher’s who have been "chomping at the bit" to throw live got their chance last night.
3- Nash County could possibly be tired and not as fresh tonight from running the bases and swinging the bats so much last night.
4- After starting 0-4 and looking like the worst Wilson Post 13 team ever assembled, you have played relatively good baseball, made it to the 3rd round, thereby playing 11 possibly 13 more games than you thought you would ever play.

Work with me here, I’m desperate!

Baseball/Life is not about getting thrown from the horse ( getting beat 32 to 5 is not just getting thrown from the horse, but getting thrown slam out of the coral), it’s whether you get up, dust yourself off, and get back on the horse!

Hey Wilson, get on the horse and play competitive baseball. Win or lose, give yourself, your coaches, and fans, something to be proud of.

I hereby proclaim that if Wilson loses tonight by 27 runs, I will buy everyone on this board a steak dinner at Beefmaster!

    Nick Hahula

I don't agree with going for two points after each touchdown. You've got the best kicker in the state on the sidelines, Nick Hahula, who is getting ready to leave for the East-West All-Star Game today, & you don't even give him a chance to kick before he leaves. That's not right.

    One for the books

Admittedly, my records only go back through 1981 so far, but the previous high for runs allowed by Wilson that I have on record is a 27-21 playoff loss to Edenton in 2006.

Previous biggest margin of defeat: 15 (twice)
    Area I East semifinals, July 9, 2000, @ Wayne County Post 11, L 1-16 (7)
    June 27, 1981: @ Edenton Post 40, L 4-19

We have been on the giving end of similar beatings more frequently. For example:
    June 19, 2007: Pitt County Post 160, W 29-4 (7)
    May 30, 1998: @ Spring Hope Post 91, W 30-2 (7)

(The interesting thing is that both years, these were the teams that went on to end our season.)

    Rocky Mount 16, Wilson 4 (8)

Rocky Mount forced a fifth game in Area I East with a mercy-rule-shortened win Thursday in Wilson. Post 58 used a 6-run sixth inning to pull away after Wilson had closed within 5-3 on a Zac Crumpler HR. Xavier Macklin of RM hit a tape-measure shot in the 5th to complete a 9-pitch at-bat and hasten the exit of Wilson ace Justin Nygard, and Post 58 feasted on two Wilson relievers to end it early, if that's what you can call a game that clocks in just under 3 hours.

Game five is Friday, 6 p.m., at Northern Nash HS. Bentley Massey, the game 1 winner, will start for Wilson. The winner will host Cary the following evening to begin the Area I finals. Rocky Mount is 16-4, while Wilson falls to 16-12.
