What realignment issues have we stumbled upon...a few I've ran across mainly pertain to enrollment figures. I recently sat down with a county athletic director and he pointed out few.

Berry HS in Charlotte has been reclassified as 2A but has an enrollment of 1400 students

Mount Pleasant HS has approx. 950 students and plays in the new SPC 3A

Jay M. Robinson left the MECA 4A to join the SPC 3A and has an estimated enrollment of about 1400

The reason given for a few of the mis-alignments is that enrollment projections were based on vacant lot permits and proposed houses that due to the recession are not being built and thus the students did not materialize.

Given a city the size of Charlotte and given the open transfer policy, I still never figured how any one of their public schools could drop down to a 2A level as was projected when the realignment was finalized. Somebody missed the ball on that.

That leads to a question I have...Why does the NCHSAA base their findings off projections? Shouldn't they use the true data from their schools.

Local schools in the Cabarrus County area have been wanting a conference comprised of local teams for a long time.

Kannapolis, Concord, and new school Hickory Ridge are all Cabarrus schools, yet playing in a Union County conference. NW Cabarrus was playing in the North Piedmont, while Mt. Pleasant was in the 2A Rocky River. JM Robinson and Central Cabarrus were in the 4A MECA conference. Central Cabarrus lost a lot of students and has had 3A numbers the last couple of years, but still playing 4A.

The NCHSAA set up a Cabarrus County Conference (SPC) with Kannapolis, Concord, Hickory Ridge, and Central all having 3A numbers. NW Cabarrus would have been 4A this season, but the new Cox Mill High School will take a lot of their students, making NWC 3A. So now you have all these schools with 3A numbers.

That left Mt. Pleasant with 2A numbers, and JM Robinson with 4A numbers. It was agreed to move so many students out of Robinson to Mt. Pleasant by the school board, making all the schools 3A.

But parents of the kids at Robinson that were to go to Mt. Pleasant show up at a Cabarrus County Board of Education meeting not wanting their kids to have to move. Somehow they convinced the board to reverse their decision.

Needless to say, the Mt. Pleasant folks are not happy and neither are the members of the other SPC schools. It's letting JM Robinson play in a 3A league with 4A numbers, while leaving Mt. Pleasant with 2A numbers.

I think the NCHSAA feels that the locals created this mismatch, so let them deal with it.

And since Cox will probably be 1A in its first season you have a conference with 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A schools......which I dont think has ever happened.

    Good luck Cox Mill

    Cox Mill and the SPC

I was told Cox Mill will have approximately 750 students this year. The school should grow to 3A enrollment the following year with the addition of a senior class.

I believe the conference will have 4 playoff berths. I dont know how they will be figured example 3A or 3AA but all will play in the 3A or 3AA state playoffs regardless of enrollment.

IMO it is really Kannapolis (1 berth) and 3 playoff berths to be fought over by the remainder of the conference teams. We'll see.
