You pay $450 for your players to be seen in a showcase tournament, and more than half of your starting players decides to go to the beach on that date. What would you do?

I guess it depends on if you can get your money back or not.You could see if there is another team that wants in and they could just pay you the entry fee and take your spot.Put together a team and fill there spots for the weekend especially if everyone planned to be there and changed there minds. There are plenty of young ladies out there that would like to fill in for a Showcase tournament.Make all the players that aren't going to be there give you there uniforms for the other players to wear. This will change a few minds.I know there is life outside the fence and you just have to be careful what route you choose because I know it tuff finding quality players once a few leave the team.

    Problem

Easier said than done in this State! This situation is not uncommon in NC softball at every level. It is not the player problem but the parent! The parents do not teach commitment, to be a part of a team, to provide what you say you will provide when you sign on to a team, to finish a commitment after you get what you want. You should have researched and understood commitment before you agreed to join the team! The TEAM provides a schedule of tournaments (usually well in advance), a name that has been earned in most cases, quality coaching, HOPEFULLY, connections, softball expertise, insurance, recruiting assistance and guidance when applicable, and assistance with negotiations on possible scholarship. On this board, it is always the player whom is wronged, don't forget most coaches and administrators of various teams do this for free and spend countless hours behind the scenes making sure your DD has as good of an experience as possible. Many want to tell you how to do things, how bad you are at running the team but few have the guts to step up and deal with all the egos, issues, lack of commitment, and time away from family it takes to run a quality organization.
Next time you think it is OK for DD to blow off her commitment, think twice! Paul, you are a PRINCE, sorry for your issues!

I kinda like this approach, but if you do, I guess you would have to be prepared to loose all or most of those players.

I could see families doing this if this was a tacked on, late in the season thing, but if it was always the intent then I really see what Lblues1 is saying. I know my kid has had to opt of lots of cool/fun personal things due to not games, but practices as well.

    tough spot for coach.

Well said Rodney!! Kinda reminds me of a conversation we just had???? I have always been of the belief that when it is all said and done the one thing you will always have is your ""word/reputation"". Unfortunately many people are no longer of this belief. Tuff situation for you cometfan, many of us experience it every year. Wish you the best!!!

If you lose the $450 I would calculate the per player cost for each of those players that wanted to remain on the team and that's what they would have to pay.

I would also give a lecture on commitment and loyalty.

I agree with LBlues, also. Many people either don't know or don't appreciate all the time and work done by the head coaches. Maybe it would be a good idea to make that time and effort a little more obvious. I have the greatest respect for head coaches; they really are under appreciated. That's just one of the reasons I would never want to be a head coach. Assistant coaches have it made; they can help all they want and never have to deal with the ugly stuff. On many teams you will find that the assistant coach is the favorite. That's because he doesn't have to handle the hard stuff!

I wonder what the college coach will say when the school is out for spring break, but the team is schedule for games:

"Hey Coach, it's Spring Break and my parents want to take me on vacation"

    "Cool...do you want to go?"

    "Yeah, Coach, I do"

" No problem...enjoy it! In fact, take the rest of the spring off...We'll miss you." Turning to another player,"Hey Kate, congratulations. You're my new starting SS."

Great point! We try to get our kids used to a little pine time, etc. to prepare them, we run poles and make practice as close to college as possible but does not always work.
