My daughter played with Amanda for a couple of seasons. She will be a great asset wherever she goes. Just a super, super kid.

    Hailey Whitley, Piedmont HS/Charlotte Cobras

Piedmont's Whitley improves stock with MVP
    by Jerry Snow2 days 8 hrs ago | 17 views | 0 | 0 | |

MONROE — Hayley Whitley flew under the radar as a junior softball player at Piedmont High last spring, but she established herself as a college prospect this summer.

Whitley, who was left off the all-conference team last season, was recently named Most Valuable Player at the prestigious Queen of Diamonds Showcase South, which had 2,200 applicants and selected 264 high school players from 33 states and two provinces in Canada. The event was held at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., Sept. 4-6.

Whitley played second base in three games and was named player of the game all three times by a panel of coaches and former players.

“That’s phenomenal what Hayley did at one of the top showcases in the country,” said Piedmont coach Tad Baucom, “There were college coaches everywhere because the level of talent is so high. For Hayley to be MVP of an event of this magnitude is very impressive.”

The Queen of Diamonds selects the pool of talent based on coaches’ referrals, and also factors in academics as well as players with potential.

Piedmont was also represented by senior Rebekah Reaves, who led her team in batting last season (.423), and rising sophomore Kayce Stegall. Parkwood senior Makenzi McAteer also participated as well as Cassie Carpenter of Metrolina Christian.

Baucom said Whitley improved her stock significantly, and has numerous schools contacting her, although none have offered a scholarship.

“She’s narrowed it down to five schools, Western Carolina, Wingate, Appalachian, Charleston Southern and Radford,” Baucom said. “She plans to visit some of those schools.”

Whitley played mostly right field for Piedmont last season but also saw action at second base and catcher.

Baucom expects Whitley to play second base in college.

“Hayley has a really solid glove at second,” Baucom said. “She’ll play there a lot for us this year. She can play anywhere on the field. She has a great attitude and she’s very coachable, always smiling.”

Whitley did make all-district last season, while Reaves was an all-state selection.

Baucom said Reaves and Whitley will both sign scholarships. He expects Reaves to sign in November.

The Panthers have already had nine players sign college softball scholarships in the past six years. They finished 19-6 last season and won a game in the playoffs.

IMO.. Hayley Whitley was the best utility prospect in the state BEFORE the season started and she is still available. She can play EVERY position other than P including C and give you a solid game.

On top of this there is no better young lady or team mate who plays the game of FP.

agreed on a great young lady!

Hayley has worked incredibly hard on her hitting the last two years and it has paid off. We are working every element of her game currently and she is improving every practice. The best part is that she is 100% engaged in her game asking questions and clarifying things.

On a different note, the article on her does have a some incorrect items, like her list of schools and that no offers, etc have been made. Hayley has quite a bit of interest and we are working towards the very best ending point for her. The Whitley's are very classy and humble people and would never correct this information.

During this pressure time for the seniors, really all personal talk about the schools pursuing them and any offers should be kept confidential or private and we do just that. Sometimes assumptions or generalizations can hurt the recruited player. I know I saw it happen to one of my 2010's where people assumed because she was not signed and so many people were after her, that she only wanted one school and that was not the case. She was simply looking for the right fit and I commend her for knowing what she wanted and sticking to her guns.

Hayley will definitely have some decisions to make between some very good schools. Whoever wins her heart will be better for it for the next four years.
