.....when a kid gets to college. Say school A and they have no money for her in her freshman year. Shes "invited" as a walk-on, ie not having to try out for a roster spot. She accepts not getting a scholarship but ends up playing here and there for school A.

If she wants to transfer to another college for her soph. year does school A have to release her?

Does school A have to release a kid who is getting only academic money?

If a kid signs an NLI as a freshman and gets athletic financial aid in her freshman year, and then in her soph. year, her $ is not renewed, does she have to be released if she wants to pursue other options?

Thank God no dog in this hunt but I was asked these questions today and I'm passing them on down the line to ya'll.

That is the 2009-2010 Transfer Guide Book from the NCAA. I am pretty sure the player would need a release. I just dealt with this very situation with a player this summer. She didn't have athletic money from institution A, but still needed a release from the AD to speak with institution B. It also depends on Conference Rules. Sometimes the Conference Rules are tighter then the NCAA rules. Regardless, any practice or game participation with the team would constitute looking into having a release and transfer rules do apply, money or not. Whether the player was a qualifier or partial qualifier also matters and what type of school they are looking to transfer to matters...Division I, II or II, NAIA or two year. I am no expert, just going off of what I experienced and have read. Its all in the handbook. Hope this helps you.

Yes, she would still need a release. 1. The coach at the other school would need a release to talk with her about the transfer. 2. The new school would need a release in order to verifiy seasons played for the future. This is very similiar to a transfer from a DIII school.
