According to the Statesville Record and Landmark there will be a new SCBL team in Statesville this summer. They will be called the Owls, a tie to previous minor league Angels afilliate, and several other Owls teams from the 40's thru the 60's. No other info was offered except that they will play @ Statesville High School and the VP/GM is Hugh McBride.

I'm sure a lot more information will be coming, but this is exciting news in an area that is baseball hungry. One of the neat things about this team is it is owned by many TBR members.

They have a great plan, a solid coach in Jamie Lowe of Surry Community College and has tremendous support from the Statesville community. One thing that will be different about this franchise are the plans to be family friendly--from fireworks to carnivals to festivals to hands on support from the players to the community.

It really is an exciting adventure being led by a group of businessman that are just like us---baseball parents.

The Boys of Summer Return to Statesville

The Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL) announced today that Statesville, North Carolina has been selected as the location of their newest franchise, The Statesville Owls. The announcement was made by League Commissioner, Bill Capps who stated, “We are very excited about the addition of the Statesville Owls to our league, expanding our presence to 8 teams representing communities from Johnson City (TN), Asheville (NC), Davidson (NC), Morganton (NC), Rock Hill (SC), Spartanburg (SC), to Clemson (SC)”. The teams are made up of the best collegiate players from across the country offering fans the opportunity to watch developing college players as they prepare for MLB.
The SCBL is a non-profit organization partially funded by Major League Baseball and is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball which includes the Cape Cod League, Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, Prospect League, Florida Collegiate Summer League, Great Lakes Collegiate Summer League, New York Collegiate Baseball League and the Valley Baseball League.
The name of the team, “Owls” is a resurrection of the former Angels minor league name which played at Statesville Senior HS field until 1962. Statesville Owls Executive Vice President and General Manager Hugh McBride explained the importance of the name and the history of the team, saying “Statesville has had a long tradition of baseball and retaining the name of the former minor league team was the right thing to do not just for Statesville but also to honor those Owls from the past”.
The Owls will play at Statesville Senior High School hosting 14 home dates starting June 1, 2010 and running through July 17, 2010.

    Go Owls

Awesome logo!!!! Great to see the expansion of the SCBL and Statesville is a natural, great community with a great baseball tradition, the perfect combination. I know that this has been a dream of many on TBR and it is great to see that it has finally happened.

Why this experience is so amazing is it started with a simple thread on TBR asking if anyone was interested in owning a summer college baseball team.

A lot has transpired since then, but we've put together an amazing group of guys who all bring a certain talent to the mix. It's a group that easily works together because we all have the same vision and how we want it to work.

But I look back on this venture and it makes me very proud that it is owned and operated by members of TBR. So bear with me this summer with updates as the Statesville Owls become the TBR's own Statesville Owls. I hope everybody will support us by coming to the games and enjoy participating in our secret trampoline jumps---don't worry, it will be firmly understood when you see it.

Braves... Maybe the new wife and I could make it up for a game or two this summer as long as the nachos, peanuts, hotdogs, and sodas were takin care of by some of them higher-ups....

But seriously, this is awesome. Looking forward to all the program success.

You've got a lifetime pass buddy!

In fact--have your wedding there--on the field!!! It would be awesome. We'll have you walk under a gauntlet of bats being held by the players. Now that's the way to get married!

I can't wait. Son's last tourney last weekend and I'm already i withdrawls. Just a thought Braves(my wife says I shouldn't have those) maye you could set aside a night for each high school team. Statesville is surrounded by alot of schools with some baseball heritage. Lake Norman, Statesville, Mooresville, N. Iredell, S. Iredell, W. Iredell.

    Thank you..we love feedback.

By the way, I have contacted a few key people to help in this area, but we are looking for host families. Hosting a college baseball player can be one of the most enjoyable experiences you will ever have...and speaking for the Statesville group, we consider the host families as one of our partners.
