Ref Question?

After a flag....when does the clock restart (by HS rules)? Seen some games where they start the clock after the ball is set....others on the start of next play. Anybody know? Sorta guessed it had more to do with the score and how late it was....lol

 

It depends on how the clock was stopped. If the officials blew the whistle for the penalty, they will start the clock once the ball is set. If the play was out of bounds or an incomplete pass, the clock will start with the next play.

 

I got a question too - end of first half - time running out. Offense just does get the snap off (it actually looked too late to me) but a flag is thrown for illegal procedure even though the play continues. Defense was also called for pass interference on the play as the clock reads zeros.

I know a half can't end on a defensive penalty. But what about offsetting? Shouldn't it just be half over since penalties offset?

In our game the refs gave the offense another down - untimed. That worked out great for them since with the stopped clock they had time to bring in the kicker for the short FG.

 

I'm pretty sure any defensive penalty continues the half even if the penalties are offset. This is so the defense couldn't commit penalties that would run out the clock during the play.

A period must be extended by an untimed down if during the last timed down of the period, there was a double foul---->one or more live-ball foul commited by each team at such a time that the penalties offset.

I think the zebras got that one correct.

 

Whether or not the clock starts after a penalty is determined by how the last down ended. Was the clock running before the penalty or was it stopped?

If the penalty is for delay of game on the offense, the clock will start on the snap.
