Is it possible to earn a save when you enter a game with a 7-3 lead?

Yes, depending on the situation. If the number of outs recorded by the pitcher and the inherited runners total up to a number that if each scored the game would have been tied, then a save can be earned. In other words, if a pitcher entered with the score 7-3 and two outs and the bases loaded and recorded the last out, he would earn a save.

 

...he may be questioning in because the save was credited to a pitcher who pitched 2 complete (based on stat line) with that 4 run lead established.... I dunno

SAVE RULES FOR HS BASEBALL

A pitcher can get credit for a save if he enters the game with a lead (regardless of how big the lead is), his team maintains the lead the entire time he pitches, and he finishes the game...as long as he throws at least 3 complete innings.

The only way he could get a save for throwing 2 innings with a 4 run lead would be if he came in with two runners on base. The tying run has to be deck when he enters the game...the only time this does not have to be true is if he enters the game at the start of an inning-then the lead can be 3 runs or less.

EX: Score is 6-3 to start the 7th. Pitchers enters and gets 3 outs - he gets a save. BUT, here is something funny...the starting pitcher starts the 7th with a 4-0 lead and gives up a leadoff HR. The score is now 4-1. A relief pitcher enters the game with no outs and a three run lead - he does NOT get a save because the tying run was not on deck.

 

I was questioning it based on the stat line provided. It appeared, based on the stats given, that began a new inning with the lead 7-3 and completed two full innings. Funny thing is that as soon as I posted the question, I told myself it was foolish, because I hadn't considered the circumstances he may have entered the game in. Either way, thanks for the replies.
