Can high school catcher's use the two piece catcher's mask? Basically ... mask and skull cap? I think the answer is no but I want to be sure. Best I can figure it has to be the one-piece hockey style so that the ears are covered. My son has always wanted to use the two-piece style. It's time for some new gear and I am not going to buy an extra mask and skull cap if he can't use them. Thanks guys!

NCHSAA rules say they must use a one piece...they can NOT use a mask and skull cap. This rule came into place about 7 years ago.

    From the rule book

Rule 1-5 Article 4: The catcher's helmet and mask combination shall meet the NOCSAE standad. Any helmet or helmet and mask combination shall have full ear protection (dual ear flaps). A throat protector, which is either a part of or attached to the catchers mask, is mandatory. A throat protector shall adequately cover the throat. The commercially manufactured catchers head, face and throat protection may be a one-piece or multi-piece design.

Penatly: Failure by a player to wear proper equipment after being so ordered by the umpire, shall result in ejection.

i miss the days of the skull cap and mask ( and i even remember the mask with the hat turned around backwards) i would hate to catch today with the hockey mask style. too claustraphobic for me. :donatello:

    Simplicity.

Thanks Stretch. So simple. Id prefere the 2 piece. All the catcher has to do is yank that mask off and go get it. Hockey style masks are heavier and there is a lot more they have to take off so why not just go to the 2 piece instead?
