What are some games that they still talk about; that are etched in memory?

I'll start. 1973 Eastern 3A championship at the DAP. South Johnston vs. Oxford Webb. The game goes 13 innings with both starting pitchers going the distance. Wayne Stephenson (SJ) strikes out 23 and Butch Shotwell (Webb) striking out 27. No score through 12 innings then SJ wins it 3-0 in the 13th.

Wow! I bet the tension was really thick when someone got in scoring position. Game could never happen today, though. There would be mutiny in the stands and crying in the streets if two HS pitchers threw 13 innings apiece in one game.

    familiar name

USC head coach Ray Tanner was the SS for SJHS. He was a freshman starter, which was unusual back in that day.

Back around the same time, I saw an American Legion game that went 23 innings. It ended in a 1-0 score. Mike Martin (Phillies #1 pick) and Mike Brown pitched all 23 innings.

Mike Martin's career ended shortly with a bad arm.
