Great piece of advice for kids of all ages.....including the adults. If you never take the risk, you will never know if you can succeed.....

    No regrets

To me that is what it is all about. Every kid playing the game will stop playing the game one day. Some will look in the mirror one day and wonder , what if , what could have been , what might have been , what should have been. Others will know. They will have no regrets. They will know. To be able to look in that mirror when its all said and done and know you were all you could be. Did all you could have done. That is all that really matters. That player will have no regrets and will will be at peace with himself. Others will spend the rest of their life wondering what could have been , what might have been. And thats sad.

You win no matter what the result when you risk everything and give everything. Because then you know in your heart you did all you could do. And that player will never have any regrets. He did all he could do. The rest will lose no matter what the results are. Because they will always wonder and they will live with regrets.

If a player does not try because they are afraid they will fail, they will never succeed. They have failed without ever trying. I would rather fall flat on my face and know I at least had the stones to get in the fight than live with the regret of never getting in the fight. But hell Im crazy anyway.

One of my very good friends set an example early on by participating in nearly everything offered in our small community. He was not a particularly gifted sort, but was undaunted in his efforts. Sports, Music, School, fashioning his own ping pong paddle, stuffing squirrels, water skiing, and helping in the community. He was, and is one the happiest individuals I know, who also has great admiration for people who achieve. I also remember his parents being very supportive and not once discouraging him from trying nearly anything. He knew that ultimately, when it was all said and done, he had love and support where it counted most. His home and family. I remember once when another friend said something like, "man, why are you wasting your time trying out for football, you know you ain't going to make it" ? His reply was something like, "no, my chances aren't very good, but if I don't try, I TRULY will never know".

    tryouts HSB vs showcase

Perhaps a distiction could be made when considering a tryout for your high school team vs a travel or showcase team.

Whichever one you may consider - it might be good - as a parent -to
take junior to a game - or better yet a practice - allow him to see the level of play or commitment necessary to play for THAT team.

Also - failure can be a great motivator -
My son tried out for middle school baseball 3 times -
never made it to the second day of cuts

    - playing now for his high school.
