Well, I didn't go to school there, but did grow up in the area... 30+ miles East (next stop, Bermuda)... and not sure I ever remember a meat packing plant...lol... surely maybe a crab picking or seafood place (although most of that was handled down our way...)... Pamlico Packing and maybe they donated a bunch and got the name from there... not as glamorous as I am about to describe, though...

...and while never explained as a youth, it was just kind of understood that Pam Pack is derived from the PAMlico River (which Washington lies along)... Pack, as in pack of wolves, pack of anything doing as 1, kinda thing. I did hear a few varied stories about a "Pack" of Privateers that used to run the River back in the day known as the Pam Pack and thats where they lifted it... but honestly not sure. Most of those stories were surely rum induced after one of our regattas...

I always thought it (Pam Pack) was kinda cool...as our HS mascot was...The Trojans... and no, there was not a latex manufacturing plant there. There was not much there. Not even a stoplight, so a Greek Warrior was selected at some point, for some reason...coulda been worse, I guess... The Jumping Mullets maybe... Or The Taters... or the Phosphorites...lol

Pamlico County HS was The Hurricanes, Mattamuskeet HS was the Lakers, Jamesville was The Bullets, Manteo were The Redskins, Belhaven Bulldogs, Creswell Tigers, I think Columbia were the Bears, Chocowinity were the Indians... and the Aurora Trojans...The Old Tobacco Belt Conference, for those of you that have been around a while.

If anybody was wondering what a Dot mascot looked like. Mean-looking fella.
