Can someone please explain this rule to me......

Here's what happen to us last night.......

In the bottom of the 1st the HOME team got what they called their DB on 1st base, at that time their coach called time and said "#6 flex running for #14 the DB. So I asked could this be possible and the given answer was "yes" by the home plate umpire. So in the 2nd we got our DB player on and so I called time and said the flex is running for the DB.....oh but wait a minute the Home plate umpire said that would mean she is a sub entering the lineup in that spot....so I said OK that means their #6 was inserted in the game as a sub for the home team...(no response from the home plate umpire)...In the 4th inning #14 for the home team batted but did not re-enter the game. (she struck out so no need to bring it up then) However, in the 7th (#14)she came back up and got walked....at that time our head coach called time and said #6 should have batted as she was subed into the game to run for #14....so she batted out of order. After much discussion, the home plate umpire said he remembered it happening but didn't write it down and it wasnt in the home book....so yep you guessed it "it didn't happen".....

I just want to know how to interpet the rule.......any help would be helpful

and we did win the game so not complaining about winning or losing just want to know the rule.......

    Designated Player

The term is a DP, not DB.
A designated player ( offense) and flex ( defense) work as one.
One hits, the other plays defense. They are tied to each other throughout the game.

When you use the "Flex" option, ie 10 person lineup, the DP is placed in the batting line up. These players can be interchanged 2x without making a sub.

example: DP ( big girl, great bat, but slow) gets a double, top of the 4th.
Flex ( 2b baseman, very fast, doesn't hit her weight) Coach can insert Flex into line up in DP position. Line up is now at 9 players.

9 hitters later, this position is up to bat. Coach has option to let flex stay in lineup or re-insert DP, taking line up back to 10. A flex or DP can be inserted 2x. After that, must substitute with new player into specific spot in line up.

Other factor... DP can enter game on defense into any position. Flex and DP can both play defense. Flex can only bat for DP. player substituted for on defense, becomes hitter on the bench.

    Confused?

Not surprised...... made my head hurt for years

Good explanation... except for the 2x interchange. Never heard that in high school ball. Any time the flex plays offense (batting or base running) it must be for the DP and it is a substitution. The re-entry rule applies, that is, the starting DP can re-enter one time. As for any substitution, the DP re-entry must be reported or an appeal can be made for batting out of order.

The DP can play defense any time at any position. This is a defensive rotation, not a substitution since the DP is considered to still be in the game when her team is on defense. Think of her normal defensive position as being "bench".

Maybe someone with a current high school rule book can state it as it is written.

DP/Flex is a great rule, but it can be confusing until you get familiar with it.

I might have confused you with the explanation.
2x substitution dis-qualifies the player. must replace her with sub

    my bad!!

The best way to think of it is when the Flex plays offense (runs or bats) for the DP, the DP has been substituted for. If the DP returns to bat, than that is a "re-entry," her last. If the Flex replaces her again, or if any other player substitutes for the DP, then the DP is now riding the bench for the rest of the game.

If the Flex sits out during defense, then the DP has substituted for the Flex, and the Flex has to use a re-entry to play again. This is a lot more obvious than the former.
