If we wasn't as far removed from Basketball season, this would be a much bigger story among the prep sports scene. For those who don't know, Stephanie Butler, the head coach at the Butler High School has been fired by CMS due to recruiting violations. According to the story in the Charlotte Observer, she will not be allowed to coach at any Charlotte-Mecklenburg school again.

I know the CMS transfer policy is seen as controversal by many...I'm courious as to the opinions of everyone on this topic. Why is it now that CMS has found it important to crack down on this issue? What does this mean for the other coaches in other sports throughout Mecklenburg County?

I know we got some folks from the QC who visit the forums, it would be interesting to get their take on what has happened over the past few days.

Sometimes you can find "stuff" if you look. I suspect CMS had to look here. I bet they could look in other places too.

I don't want to make accusations without giving Coach Butler a chance to defend herself, but I've heard from several people that there was a lot more than simply talking to two students who were moving to her school anyway.

What did you hear Bucko? It is my understanding one of the students was rezoned to Butler when CMS did the reassignments because of the new high school in Mint Hill. I also heard the parents initiated the contact and it was a one time conversation. A lifetime ban from coaching in CMS is the most severe penalty I have seen come from CMS. It seems harsh to me. Must be more to the story then what has been released.

My understanding is she can re apply after 1 year. She recruited plain and simple, her supporters don't want to call it that but she did. If you are a good coach then coach the kids that are fed into the school and quit trying to win at all cost and think you're slick enough not to get caught. I blame the parents more than the coach, they are really the problem.

You blame the parents.. really? CMS reassigns thousands of students and parents are not allowed to contact or speak with coaches who their child will possibly be spending numerous hours with on a daily basis? You have coaches and teachers doing unethical things all the time but parents can't try to get a feel for a person who will have great influence over their child? I don't blame the parents...they are the ones who have the responsibility for looking out for their child. I blame CMS's ridiculous rules...I understand residency violations but not allowing parents to talk with coaches who coach at a school who becomes the child's home school through their own reassignment process is outrageous.

This goes back a few years to the girls coming from S Meck and a girl coming from Union Co. to play on a dominate state championship team. Nothing ever happens in a vacumn and past indescretions do have an affect on current happenings. It's shameful that CMS even has to spend money and effort on such things. Parents are the problem when they let kids know this is how it's done.
