Triple play in showcase game

There Stretchy...........I started it for you...now fill in the gaps.

 

Norcal East vs South Canes 17u

Setting: Radford High School home of the Bobcats....one of the nicest high school fields you will ever see. Saturday afternoon game.

History: Norcal East had lost to the Canes in a very good game the week before at the JMU showcase.

As we umpires like to do when we feel there is going to be a potential tight game we ran a 3man crew with A Non E Mous volunteering to work the game for FREE.......Stretchy on the dish and Fish at first base.

Norcal is the visiting team and they score 2 in the first. Canes tie the game in the third and then both teams take a lead and give up the lead over the next 3 innings. We get to the bottom of the 7th innng with Norcal holding a slim 6-5 lead. Sure enough neither team wants to lose this game and so the fan fun begins where every pitch thrown seems like life or death for someone. Making a long story short the Canes get a leadoff triple followed by a walk and everyone of course is expecting another last inning walk off win for the Canes.

BUT the unbelievable happens as the next batter hits a medium depth fly ball to left field for out #1 then a bullet is thrown slightly high to the plate where the catcher reaches up catches the ball and comes right down with the tag as his foot is blocking the plate, the runner arrives at the same time and he is banged at the plate for out #2, without celebrating or hesitating the catcher immediately fires a pee rod to 2nd base where the Canes runner from first is banged out for out #3. TRIPLE PLAY GAME OVER.

The unreal moment should have been caught on tape because for what seemed like an eternity the players on field did not seem to realize the game was over even as the Norcal players in the dugout came running out to celebrate a great play and a big win. Truly a big time showcase moment for all parties involved including the college coaches in attendance who stated to me the next day that they had never seen a game end on a triple play.

An hour after the play Fish, A Non E Mous and Stretchy were still talking about it over a few cold ones at Backstreets Italian Restaurant.

 

which I might add...everyone needs to try Backstreets in Blacksburg at least once...great food and the SA Summer Ale's and Blueberry Cheesecake were delish!!!!
