I am not a proponet of private schools or their rules, but I do undestand that in many cases 8th graders play varsity because if the school is small they need them to fill a varsity roster.

Hey Braves, We haven't started the Showcase vs. Legion topic yet, want me to start it up? Got to keep consecutive years running going!

Too hot to go fishing, might as well argue.:fishing:

My regards, since the thread was titled State Games - and the earlier comment was referring to some players from a district that were reclassified I just thought the reference was to the State Games.

I wasn't trying to offend - nor was I offended, just curious why Charlotte was mentioned as cities possibly abusing the reclassification. It is what it is and I am sure it happens in more places than we know. Parents hold their kids back quite regularly for sports purposes but I chose not to as well.

But I agree, give the kids the credit they deserve - and Region 5 played a great game. Ramsey pitched 3 great innings - watched him play since he was 8 and on Sunday he was "the Man."

People keep bringing up the reclassification issue with Charlotte private schools and it doesn't even apply to the schools in the Charlotte Independent School Athletic Association (Charlotte Christian, Country Day, Latin, Providence Day and Cannon School). Those schools have been playing under the same rules as public schools for the last four or five years. So the big issue of kids transferring and reclassifying has been a non factor for years, yet people continue to beat the dead horse.

What are the rules in Charlotte for public and private schools? It was my understanding that public schools will not let you stay back a grade for athletic purposes. It has to be academics. But private schools will let you repeat a grade for any reason. Does it have to be 8th grade or before?
What about age? Can you play sports once a young man turns 19?

The practice was stopped 4-5 years ago in Charlotte. Here is an interesting article by Langston Wertz about this subject http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/01/09/1171062/5th-year-senior-rule-gums-up-private.html

I don't have the rules for private and public schools, but basically once you enter the ninth grade you have 8 semesters of athletic eligibility. In private school you could repeat a year but after the 8th semester you would be ineligible to participate in athletics. There is a date during the year where if you turn 19 before that date, you are ineligible and that goes for both public and private schools. I am under the impression that they use the same date. I can't really speak to what the process is for public schools, but at one private school, you have to apply to repeat a grade and the application is reviewed by a committee at the school. In my opinion, these are decisions made by families in the best interest of their child and should be respected as such. Most people on the outside speculating on the reasons, without any real information, are doing everyone concerned a disservice.

    To clarify...

I was referring to 3 "reclass guys" from Region 5. I have no idea about Charlotte area players.

Forget whether or not the three "reclassers" made the difference toward medalling.
They took THREE spots on a team designed for underclassmen.
They took 3 players' spots who might have been 3 of the best true underclassmen in the region; who could have benefitted from "the looks" at scout day or a solid performance in the games.

[And at least two of them were already told upon transferring and reclassing that that process, along with playing for their new coach (with his connections) would get them their schollies - so why did they need State Games? I know one was offered a couple D-2s as a true junior/rising senior a year ago, but literally laughed it off stating he knew that he would "do better" with reclassing. I hope all that wasn't a pot shot...)

Finally, it's not personal or about those guys - notice no names. It is about processes that may disadvantage others.

    All still friends?:kid:

    ??????

So 3 players that were Juniors this year took spots from 3 other Juniors? Realistically, there were 20 Sophomores and Juniors on the team that took spots that 20 other Sophomores/Juniors would liked to have had.....What's the difference?

What about the players that participate in State Games that have already verbally committed to a college? Should they play? I think the answer lies in the question, "what is the purpose of State Games?" Not each of our personal takes on it, but what the organizers had in mind when they planned this event. (A question I don't have the answer to.)
A coach can nominate a player who is an underclassman and plays on their school's varsity team, they still must try-out and be selected by the region coaches...the players met that criteria.

    One last thought...

What if those three "reclass" guys tried out as true underclassmen (their first time) and were cut - excuse me, didn't make the team - back then. Then a year later they made the team, after getting an "extra year" to do so. Do you see any problem there?

And that is all I have. No argument, just thoughts for discussion.

There is no way everyone will agree with me - no matter how logical, precise and correct I am. I know this because I am married!:surrender:
