IMO , I think certain regions of legion ball is as good or better than the top showcase teams. In Wayne county and Wilson county, they could put their legion teams against any of the top showcase teams and beat them( and don't let the college kids play). I could take a team from just Wilson and Wayne county and would be one of the best showcase teams. We wouldn't have to go all over to get pitching, because the positional players and the piching is some of the best in the state. I don't have a kid in legion ball, but I have seen enough of showcase to make this determination. Legion ball will be back.....Happy 4th of July

Big t, your exactly right showcase is no better than legion. What I have seen some of the teams have great pitching and positional players they think are good until their pitching gets hit and they make errors. I have seen many players on teams that are overrated and pumped up by being on a good teams, that have great pitching. Give me a kid that has to face great pitching and does well, and I'll take him over kids that gets to hit marginal piching and does well. This is what you get in showcase. Many of the better teams try to steal talent away from teams that are up and they have a hard time to reach their calliber on a constant basis.

your right, Wayne and Wilson county they could make up a college team and be very competitive. Good baseball in that part of the state baseball hotbed.

I dont know much about Legion ball. I have what might be a dumb question.
Do you have to live within a certain geographic area in order to be on a team or can you play on any team you want?

I can't say that "one is better than the other" ... I can say that each has it's place to fit a specific need.

AL still has it's foothold in the more rural parts of NC where pride in community and playing for a purpose is part of the approach. Regardless of talent level you may wish to evaluate.

Showcase is just that. An opportunity (many) to be rolled out in front of college coaches to be seen and evaluated for their needs. Savvy college coaches still show up at Legion games to see players playing for a purpose, not just showcasing their "skills".

Both are baseball, serving two different purposes.

So to try and roll out "one being better than the other", I won't really say. It's much easier on a coach to go to a showcase and plus or minus players than to scour the countryside at legion games. I know of three players who will be signed in the coming weeks due to their perfomance on the Legion field and not having paid a dime to showcase.

I do think their is room for both, but I feel AL needs to revamp their methodologies to accomodate the current day way baseball is being driven.

Great summation Diesel. I will say as an umpire I would be hardpressed to ever go back to doing Legion ball. In my area there is too much corruption that goes on with coaches getting paid a percentage of attendance gate and purposely losing games/play-off games so that they can make more money. Some would argue showcase is about money as well but I think its intentions are genuine in regards to "showcasing" players and finding places for them to play.

Aren't most of the studs currently playing Wilson Legion ball the same players that made up the Wilson Bulldogs Showcase team. That team was incredibly talented last year and one of the reasons why we invited the Wilson Bulldogs to Woodstock 2010 this year. There is no reason for them to play showcase this year and it makes sense they are playing Legion. They are all committed, so there is no reason to showcase.

All I will throw in there is...

Play Legion ball from May-July and play Showcase August-November.
