ENC State Babe Ruth

The eastern nc state babe ruth tournament begin at CB Aycock in Fremont yesterday. Three games were played. In the 16-18 bracket game one had Albermarle (Elizabeth City, Camden, Outer Banks) defeat Johnston County.

Game 2 saw Coastal Plain ( Beaufort, Pitt Co.) defeat Triangle (Cary, Granville) 7 to 3. Michael Roberson (Washington HS 2010, Louisburg) threw the first three innings given up two runs for CP. Austin Bowden ( Ayden Grifton 2011) pitched the last four allowiing two hits and a run. Leading hitters for CP with at least two hits each Caleb Hines (Bear Grass 2010) and Jared Oxedine (Faith Christian 2011). CP Plays friday at 1:00.

Game 3 saw Crystal Coast (Havelock, Carterett Co.) defeated Wayne Co 11-2

Game four of the night was suppose to be the opening game of the 16 year old tournament bw Lumber River (Lumberton, Pembroke) vs Wayne Co. Not sure what happen, neither team showed up. Waiting for details today. The 16's may become a two team series between CP and Triangle. CP16's and Triangle schduled to play at 4pm today.

 

Friday 18's

10am - Lumber River vs Albemarle
1pm - Crystal Coast vs Coastal Plains
7pm - Triangle vs Wayne County

 

To say the least this has been the most disappointing enc state babe ruth tournament i've experienced in 12 years. The 16 year old tournament started with a 5 team bracket when the pairings were released. By the start of this week it was down to 4. As I stated in my previous post two 16 yr old teams failed to check in or show to play on Thursday. One from the host county. Leaving two teams. When this happen thursday night the CP 16 staff requested to be placed in the older division. The older division had a odd number of teams. We were told no. We show up today to find out that us and triamgle will play a two out of three. We would prefer a three of five at least to give our kids games. We have two kids who have attended five practices but out of town today and tomm. They will not even get to play.
Then today a 18-U team no shows. This leaves a team with a bye in this tournament in the losers bracket tomm. We win our 16U game VS Triangle 15-1 today. We stoped running bases in the third on pballs. We once again approached the tournament director to let us now take Lumber River (no show) spot in the losers bracket. We were told once again no.

jr legion

so how has Jr legion affected youth leagues like BR & Pony, Dixie , little TarHeel, etc?

 

In our area (Greenville) just a little. Greenville Rose kids play babe ruth until needed by senior legion. Coach RV runs the league and does not miss a Prep (13), Jr. (14-15) or Sr. (16-18) babe ruth game all summer from his seat at the top of Guy Smith. If Rose did a jr. legion team you would have 15 of his kids playing. He has 7 Jr. babe teams (14-15yr olds) and 2 sr. babe (16-18 yr olds) playing on any given night. Thats alot of future rampants playing. A few schools in our Coastal Plain summer leaugue have started to field jr. legion teams. We lost washington for several years to jr. legion now they are back this year in senior babe ruth. In our league we have three or four small 1-A and private schools that use babe ruth to keep there teams togther. All there players for the next year fall into the 16-18 bracket. Some teams play 15's as well.

 

Did the state director not know these teams were going to be a no show?

 

That's part of our question. The state director is not present but has been very helpful to my emails. Part of our problem lies with his representative. These teams did not show for a 8 am check in Thursday. I'm not sure that any contact was attempted until about 7:45 Thursday night. It was as if they just expected these teams to appear with no confirmations. My biggest complaint is that we could have been placed in the older bracket very easy. Im very fortunate that our 16 year old team would have been very competive in the older bracket.

Charlie Parsons (Cardinal Gibbons '10 / Stanly CC) of Triangle with a grand slam and 4-4 night. Michael Forsythe (South Granville '10 / UNCOMMITTED!) got the win. The Triangle All-Stars were shorthanded with only 9 players present but the 9 were determined from the first pitch to live another day.

Triangle next plays Sunday at 4pm vs the winner of Crystal Coast and Wilson-Johnston (10am Saturday).

Did you guys lose that McDonald kid, and where did tke kids go from last years team. yaw had some guys that could have returned this year
