I heard the announcers on the Cherryville pre-game show say that this was the first time that all #1 seeds has been defeated on day 1. (since the tourn. went to its current config) Can't remember what year they said the tourn. changed, maybe 2000 or 2005. Perhaps one of you remember.

    Wilmington Post 10 @ Cherryville Post 100

Wilmington entered today's game w/a record of 22-5 and Cherryville came into today's game w/a record of 25-15. The winner advances to play the loser of today's 4:30 pm game between Rutherford Co. vs. Whiteville. That game is scheduled for a 12:30pm start on Monday.

Starting pitchers today are Cody Bridges for Post 10 and Adam Benfield for Post 100. Game started very close to 1pm.

    The final score is:

    Wilmington - 3
    Cherryville - 4

Legion state champion "used to be" determined by the teams simplying continuing series-play until the state champ was determined. I actually like that idea because I believe you have a more accurate picture of "the best team" coming out on top,,,,,, however, travel was a huge issue, especially in the later rounds when you had teams traveling 100's of miles every day to play a best of 7 series with rotating home sites.

Concerning today's double-elim tournament with final 7 teams and 1 host team, Caldwell County hosted the very first tournament under today's format in the year 2000 (could be wrong, but I got a hotdog on that answer).

Thanks for that info. I heard the guys use 2000 last inning again, so you are not the only one that believes that.

I know that when the "state" was in Gastonia a couple of years ago, it started earlier in the week, and the champion was crowned late saturday. The casual fan probably liked this because if your team was still in it at the end, you could make plans to see the championship games. The family members will be making every effort to go no matter the date/time.

I suppose this current way works better for the busine$$ part of the game. Having all the teams start on saturday brings in all the families and fans from all over, so you sell lots a tickets on the 1st day. Local economy benefits because any number will decide it is easier to get a hotel room and go back on sunday. Even it you team is knocked out, you got to see 2 games, then back to work on monday.

Exactly, today's tournament format (to me) is more about economics.

Being a baseball purist like I am, I still like playing series til the end,,, but I will admit the tournaments are a lot of fun, get to see and meet a lot of people, and even if your team isn't playing, its a great weekend to go see some great baseball from all across the state.

Great job guys keeping us updated.
