College Camps

Can anyone share (dad or son) their experience at any of the College Camps. How it was run, how many kids, what you felt you got out of it? We are lucky to have so many good schools to choose from here in North Carolina.

 

I took my son to quite a few camps some really good some awful. Here are a few I remember.

The Good

1. Wingate- Lot of interaction with coaching staff and a number of other schools coaches attended. This was under Coach Osborne.

2. Pfeiffer- Again alot of interaction with coaches from Pfeiffer as well as other schools and some MLB scouts also there.

3. App St- Same as other 2. The only downfall was I thought there were too many kids in attendance. But overall pretty good.

The Bad-

1. UNCP- Clearly nothing but a fundraiser for the team. Most of the time the coaches didnt even work with thw campers. Had the players running stations. I Hardly even saw a coach.

 

Big fan of camps

I like the camp approach.....can't beat getting eyeballed directly by the head coach and pitching coach right behind the cage, subtleties of a pitcher's talent can be seen.

UNC-Chapel Hill......very good, coaches everywhere and devoted to the day. Lots of interaction with Coach Fox and he opened and closed with words of inspiration, particularly his advice to parents about the recruiting process (very enlightening). Talented players attending.

Western Carolina.....very good also. Coaches were on the field and devoted to the whole day's events. Lots of talented players from throughout the Southeast...lots of opportunities to perform.

Elon.....good idea, less than hoped for execution. Fall camp, November 2009. Four pros scouts in uniform + about 20 colleges represented. Lots of instruction & lots of campers (many underskilled). Arrived at 8:00 am for registration and afternoon games got strung out after too much BP. My son was supposed to pitch to 5 batters in the 5th & 6th inning of the 3rd game (3:00 pm start)......actually threw first pitch at 11:15 PM, fifteen hours after arriving on a sunny day (no weather delays) with temps in the 40's all day....that was a long day, for sure!

 

All the previous camps are good ones. Clemson for me was awesome. Coach Leggett was very hands on as were his assistants, plus other college coaches plus high school. The December camp is good, but weather can be an issue. Summer camps very good and the all have Leggetts high level of intensity and energy.

I have heard South Carolina's is good also from those that have gone, but I have not done so. Georgia Tech has a really good christmas camp. They have indoor facilities for all sessions and do a good job with hitting.

It looks like they provide a day for anybody 9 - 19 yo

Go to the right camp for you.

Check the # signed up if you can.
Some camps will not have enough qualified participants to muster a good scrimmage.



If a recruiter invites you to go - GO - if you have the time.

 

I took my son to quite a few camps that he recieved personal calls or emails to attend. Some were good but we got really frustrated at some because no matter how well he did, they were only looking for pitchers. I feel that if that is the case then dont invite us on a personal phone call and waste our time and money, we could be going to a school that would be interested. We went to the Winthrop camp and spent all day there and only got 1 inning behind the plate and 1 at bat, 11 cuts in bp. This was the same for everyone. My son has signed with a D1 school so its not like he was a guy who couldnt play. I guess my point is just because they invite you, do some legwork and go to a camp that is lookin for your kind of player so you dont waste time and money.

any kid playing in the showcase world is gonna get many many invites by e-mail and mass mailing -

a kid that has had on-going communication with a recruiter - should take the invite seriously.
