I stopped & watched for a few minutes this pm........

..... a young girls softball team practicing, looked like 10 or 12 U. The majority of the girls had on face masks, even at other positions like 1B, SS & LF.

maybe it will become a status symbol. nice testimony by the originator of this thread. and glad you insisted and glad your dd listened.

    Also Thankful

Being the father of the girl who hit the ball, I am also extremely thankful she was not injured. You always hate to see a fellow balla hurt in anyway but this one could have been something disastrous. Also lets not forget the effect it could have on the person who caused the injury. Knowing my child as I do, she would have been devastated to know she seriously harmed a fellow softballer. We tip our hat to the player because she showed tremendous courage in returning to the game and her love for the game showed bright and true.

    Facemasks are the new cool!

Having two children who've played the game(, oldest now in college and has switched over to lacrosse, youngest plays 12U) I have seen quite a few face injuries. The great thing about our association & league is that now we require all infielders, especially pitchers, to wear a facemask or at very least a mouthguard. Facemasks are touted as the protection of choice. If you stop by our practices or games, you will see that 99% of our players wear a facemask. It used to be "I don't want to wear that ugly thing....now it's "Where's my mask, I've got to have it". It's what they get used to....My youngest finally got the message when she saw a good friend of ours get knocked off the mound with a line drive to the face. Our friend had played ball for years with our oldest daughter. Neither would wear the mask, they weren't really used alot until they were in high school. Didn't feel comfortable, didn't like the look of it.
If you see a child knocked off her feet with a line drive to the face and the child doesn't move for what seems like an eternity and then by God's grace is ok....you'll start wearing the mask. Especially with bats like the Rockettech being used....ball comes off too quickly and limited time to react. After that nite, there was no choice. God sent a message and we all got it.
