    Charlotte Country Day baseball

[IMG]Charlotte Country Day had a fantastic season, finishing 7th in the Observer Sweet Sixteen. Highlights for me:

    1. bouncing back from a tough 3-2 opening loss to Marvin Ridge to record 15 straight wins, including a 9-3 win over Myers Park in the opener of the Jack Sink tournament

    2. Junior catcher Brian Duncan's walkoff gap shot to knock in the winning run in a wild 10-9 victory over Wesleyan to advance to the state finals series. Country Day needed to score two runs in the bottom of the 7th and did it to advance.

    3. William Frazier's 10K, 2-0 shutout of rival Charlotte Christian....a shutout of Christian in the CISAA is a real rarity.

Congratulations to Mike Hennessey on winning the CISAA title and for recording his 100th victory

    A team to remember

The 2011 HS baseball season will forever live in my memory as the time I got to watch the greatest team of kids ever. The 2011 East Meck Eagles were truly like brothers and forged a bond that I hope will last all their lives. They did EVERYTHING with class. They competed every night and win or lose they always stood proud. I still hear from people about the EM vs Ardrey Kell game on Ardrey Kell's Senior night. AK was ranked #1 in the state and EM went into their house and won handily. After the final out, in what would be considered a big upset by any measure, the team quietly lined up, shook hands, gathered their gear and went to the bus. The bus ride was FAR more animated but these kids were not going to show up their foes in front of their families and friends. That show of class was noticed by many and ranks very high in my proudest moments as a parent.

    Pitching

In the games that I was fortunate enough to watch this year, 2 pitchers provided the highlights that stood out:

    * Top Performance: Zach Mozingo's near-perfect game no-hitter against Wilson Hunt in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

    * Top Pitcher: Benton Moss. Saw him pitch several times & he was consistently head & shoulders above all the rest.

    Watching a team come together

It was watching our very young, very small (roster wise - 11 on the roster) team grow as players and as a team during the course of the season. It was watching the 4 seniors get behind the underclassmen and encourage them and support them as they grew into their roles on the team. It was watching a team who didn't care who did it, just so long as somebody did it, and getting so excited for whoever came up with the crucial at bat or made the big play in the field. It was watching a team exceed by far the expectations people had for them at the beginning of the season, and watching them celebrate the successes of their teammates and agonize over the losses together. It was having the privilege of feeding this great group of boys a pregame meal (with the help of other parents) before every single game of the season. It was watching this group of young men linger on the field after the last game, not wanting to let the season end quite yet, even though it was prom night. It has been a great ride, and I have loved watching every minute of it.

Friday night - April 22nd...... a rainy, wet, and raw evening in Concord.

In their regular season final game (on their first senior night of the school's existance) the Cox Mill Chargers baseball team defeated the heavily favored Northwest Cabarrus Trojans 5-4 in a thrilling game. This win allowed the Chargers to tie for 5th in the SPC conference, qualify for a play in game against Central ( which they also won ), and move in to the State Playoffs in just their second year.

I had the pleasure to watch 11 sr's play this season that I had the opportunity to coach when they were 12 yr olds. I was so happy to see all of them play hs baseball...as a coach (and father of one), it made me so proud of all of them.

That's it?..only 7 people experienced something this year that they will always remember?

I don't even have a kid playing and yet to see players like Lou Trosch, David Daniels, Logan Ratledge and Brett Austin finish their HS years with a bang...is so sad that it ended so quickly, but now I get to watch their future success at the next level.

What a terrific thread to be able to mention your thoughts and experience from watching your son and his team's accomplishments throughout the year. We have some great responses, but only 7?
