7/7.....Sanderson over S. Johnston 8-6....Spartans 7-3 overall...7-2 in their division. Looks like a 3-way battle for playoff spots in the Mideast between Sanderson, Knightdale, and Smithfield-Selma. Clayton could also slip in the race if those 3 were to falter.

Standings going into this week (based on CCSSL website):

    Knightdale......5-1-1
    Sanderson......7-2
    SSS..............6-3
    Clayton.........7-4-1

Sanderson and SSS play twice this week, so a lot will be determined by the end of the week.

Spartans now 9-3 overall....8-2 in the NW Division.

Sanderson and SSS face off again Thursday night at SSS. If Sanderson wins they will clinch a CCSSL playoff spot.

Deep South Division Standings (as of 7/19/11)

    TEAM....................OVR (DIV)
    Scotland County.....11-2 (8-2)
    Richmond County....12-3 (9-3)
    Lumberton...............6-3 (5-3)
    Purnell Swett...........8-7 (6-5)
    Pinecrest................7-9 (5-7)
    North Moore...........1-10 (1-7)
    Hoke......................4-9 (2-9)

Missing a few scores from several teams, but looks like Scotland and Richmond are the top two teams moving on to the playoffs from the Deep South.

As for which team is the #1 and #2 seed: Scotland and Richmond split their regular season meeting last Thursday during a doubleheader at Scotland (SC won 2-0, RC won 8-7). Both teams entered this final week of the regular season at 8-2 in the division with two games to play.

Scotland played a home and home with North Moore on Monday and Tuesday, but I haven't heard/been able to find any results/scores from either of those games.

Richmond completed the regular season with a 3-0 home win over Swett Monday, but fell 6-5 in 9 innings on the road at Swett Tuesday, so a pair of wins by the Scots would give them the division and #1 seed and drop Richmond to the #2 seed.

Here is how the Northwest division stands after Monday's games
    Apex
    10 - 2
    Holly Springs
    7 - 3
    Orange
    7 - 4
    Raleigh Independent
    7 - 4
    NW Guilford
    4 - 7

Orange and Holly Springs play tonight @ Orange. If Holly Springs wins tonight they wrap up the #2 seed.If Orange wins tonight, there will be a three way for the #2 seed. The tie will be decided by a two game playoff between the three teams on Thursday night.

Sanderson plays Knightdale tonight at home. A win by the Spartans clinches a playoff spot. A loss drops them into a tie with Smithfield. Not sure how the tiebreaker would be decided since the teams split their two games....both decided by one run.

Deep South Division Standings (as of 7/20/11)

    TEAM....................OVR (DIV)
    Scotland County.....13-2 (10-2)
    Richmond County.....12-3 (9-3)
    Lumberton...............9-4 (8-3)
    Purnell Swett...........8-7 (6-5)
    Pinecrest.................7-9 (5-7)
    Hoke County..........4-10 (2-10)
    North Moore...........1-14 (1-11)

A passed ball in the bottom of the 9th at Swett last night not only cost Richmond a 6-5 decision - but also their chances of a top seed and at least a share of the division crown - as Scotland took advantage of the slip up to clinch the Deep South #1 seed by sweeping both their meetings from North Moore this week in impressive fashion and closing out the regular season topping the division outright.

The Scots open up the CCSSL playoffs Monday at Western Harnett against Terry Sanford (SW#2) , while Richmond takes a trip north up US#1 to Southern Lee and does battle with the Central's top team, Garner.

Even with the top two teams set, there's still one final game remaining on the docket to be played tonight down in Robeson County. With nothing but bragging rights on the line, Lumberton travels to cross-county rival Purnell Swett to close out the 2011 Deep South regular season schedule, making up a rain-out from earlier in the season. A wild pitch in the bottom of the 8th inning was all that separated the two in their first meeting earlier in the season at Lumberton where the home team escaped with a 4-3 victory.

Here are the results from the final week of play in the Deep South:

    Monday, July 18th
    @ Pinecrest 4, Hoke County 1
    Hoke County 9, @ Pinecrest 2
    Scotland County 14, @ North Moore 3 (6 innings)
    @ Richmond County 3, Purnell Swett 0

    Tuesday, July 19th

    @ Scotland County 11, North Moore 1 (6 innings)
    @ Purnell Swett 6, Richmond County 5 (9 innings)

    Wednesday, July 20th
    Lumberton @ Purnell Swett

Swett put together a nice season this summer... finished a couple of games above .500 both overall and in the division... split with two of the three teams that finished above them in the standings... were competitive in all 7 of their losses - which came by a combined total of 15 runs (largest single margin of defeat was 4 runs)...

They were 3-3 on the season in 1-run games, and 1-2 in extra-inning games, which included loosing on a wild pitch in a 9-inning affair at Lumberton and on a walk-off hit in the 7th-inning against Pinecrest on the back end of a 5-inning doubleheader...

Posted some nice wins over quality competition in Richmond, Lumberton, Jack Britt - as well as going on the road and knocking off a then undefeated Southern Lee team that finished 13-4 overall and won the SW division. A strong showing by the Rams who struggled through their first two seasons of the new SEC.

While I'm on the subject of dishin' out props, I might as well go ahead and give some up for Scotland being that big nasty and just tearing this division out the frame this season... breezed through their schedule dropping only a pair of games by a combined total of 3 runs...

Destroyed pretty much every team they faced - racked up 127 total runs and allowed just 35 - nearly outscoring their opposition by 100 runs - en route to 5 mercy-rule victories while posting a team-high 4 shutouts and allowing no more than 2 runs in 6 other games... That's is absolutely nuts.
