I totally understand not playing in the finals. The winner's bracket finals is a different deal I agree, but they could have done that any number of ways. They could have played and let the team win the game. It would be hard to convince the kids to do that though, so they chose to do it this way. It's a benefit of being with the same organization and working together. I'm not sure how the national folks can police what is going on in each state.

You have to hope that the players have learned good morals from their parents. I can't see players that know right from wrong having any respect for these coaches. This is disgusting behavior by adults who are supposed to be role models.

    One question to ASA

I have no knowledge of what took place nor do I have a dog in the fight.
My question is about what the ASA stated in a response as the events that led to their decision on the matter.

If this incident took place at the college or world level would it still be condoned?
It would be nice for a SC or National rep to answer this question here on TBR.

I will only say a few things on this as most people in SC know my feelings about what happened.

The 2 teams are NOT co champions. Elite/Genovese is the SC State champion. Now in order for that to have happened with the 2 teams not playing each other then the only team left with an undefeated record (Elite/Pack) had to have forfeited the title back to Elite/Genovese.

I dont like the way it went down at all. I think it makes a mockery of the game. The slammers and the crush both had their chance to put a wrench in the gears by beating either team and we didnt. It did give Elite/Genovese and unfair advantage against the slammers because why their kids were in the hot sun playing the elite simply forfeited and took a nice long break. The TD had a chance to make this a little more soothing for the coaches by having a conversation with them rather than hiding in his car for over an hour after it all took place and people were giving him an ear full.

for the people that questioned the morals at USC Upstate please get a life. What happens with Pack's summer team full of 15 year olds has no impact on the kind of things that go one at that fine school. Hawkins is a first class guy and runs a first class program.

When your JOB is to be a good coach and role model and you make a mockery of both unfortunately it does have a reflection on the school/program that you represent. One doesn't just throw their morals out the window because it is summertime then get them back when school starts in the fall. IMO this is absolutely unacceptable behavior by an assistant coach at a Division 1 college.

    Dawgfan:

First I am not a Slammer Coach nor team manager but below is your answer. The response from ASA was a short two paragraph letter which can be found on the Sandhills Slammers Website for those wanting to view.

What griped me the most that based on the response the Slammers had no chance for any remedy once the tournament was over. We tried very hard that day and were told time and time again nothing could be done. Below is a web board response and then the second paragraph of ASA's final ruling:

Local SCASA on SCVarsity Message board the Day after State Tournament

Posted by SCASA(Deputy Jo Commissioner) on 6/27 the day after the State Tornament

Next anyone blaming the umps and directors for not handling it when it happened obviously has no idea what went down. The SC ASA State commissioner was called, the Regional ASA commissioner was called and national office was called. If all 3 are telling you that there is nothing you can do about it, then why would you want US to break ASA rules and make them play? Whether it was ethically right or wrong is up to each individual person, but we have to follow the rules we were given and thats what we did. And Dale you knew David called those who were higher up, you just didnt like the answer you got so you keep digging and digging until you get some support. That is your choice to do that if it helps you feel better, but we did what we were suppose to. Teams had questions of whether what the Elite was doing was within the rules so we checked on it and ruled accordingly. We didnt sit on our hands and make crap up like you did with the accusations you made of David. Anyone who knows David knows he is about as ethically correct as anyone I have ever met and would never bend the rules to help another team. I understand the teams views that dont agree with the ruling, but we cant go agaisnt our supervisors either when they tell us we cant do anything about it.

National ruling below totally disputes above but they provide no relief even when the locals don’t know the Code. In the example above the Regional and SC State Commissioner are the same person. Gerald McDonald. David Harris was the tournament director and Chad was the deputy Jo that posted this and is David’s partner putting on tournaments. No one at the Nationals was called although that laim was made above.

    Ron’s response:

“Upon review of all documents submitted I have concluded that the ASA Code was not violated and therefore, deny your request that a berth be awarded to your team. The Code is clear that it is up to the tournament director and local association to suspend a team in Championship Play if they forfeit a game. Since the Team (SC Elite-Genovese) was not suspended they had the right to drop to the losers bracket and continue play in the State Tournament. AS the tournament played out your team was eliminated and did not earn a berth.”

Signed: Ron Radigonda, Executive Director ASA

Sounds like a case of poor ethics combined with a few politics. Softball is getting to be a dirty business. Take a good look around folks it is all about the MONEY. There are some adults that should be ashamed here.
