    South Johnston coach suspended

    from N&O newspaper:

South Johnston High has been sanctioned and faces a possible fine for violation of N.C. High School Athletic Association football practice rules and Coach Joe Salas has been suspended from his head football coaching duties, according to Johnston County Schools.
"Johnston County Schools takes matters of this nature seriously and is conducting a review of the issues," Terri Sessoms, a system spokesperson, said in an email.
South Johnston football has experienced a resurgence in recent years under Salas. The program was 8-5 in 2010 and was 14-2 in 2009. The program also won 10 games in 2007.
Salas is 44-42 at South Johnston since taking over in 2004. He guided the team to its first playoff appearance in more than a decade in 2006 and had the Spartans playing in the 3-AA championship game in 2009.

    coach Salas resigns

    from wraltv:
Joe Salas won't be the head football coach at South Johnston High School when official practice begins on Saturday.
Johnston County Schools announced Wednesday that Salas resigned from his coaching position at South Johnston, but will stay on as a teacher at the school. District spokeswoman Terri Sessoms said Salas resigned for "personal reasons."

Shane Dular, who served as the offensive coordinator under Salas, will step in as the head coach. Dular has been with South Johnston's football program for eight years.
"Coach Dular is excited about this new opportunity and assures the community that the team will not miss a beat," Sessoms said. "[Dular] is confident that the winning tradition established by Coach Salas will be continued."
Dular is from Georgia, and his coaching career got its start at Valdosta State. He has also coached at several high school in Georgia.
Salas was suspended from his coaching duties after the N.C. High School Athletic Association notified Johnston County Schools on July 19, that allegations of rule infractions were made against the football program.
The NCHSAA and Johnston County Schools both declined to comment on the specific allegations, but multiple sources have told HighSchoolOT.com that the probe includes allegations that South Johnston's football team held illegal practices that consisted of body-to-body contact.
Body-to-body contact is not allowed until the sixth day of official football practice in August.
Salas took over the South Johnston program in 2004 and led the Trojans to success the program had not seen in some time, including a trip to the 2009 NCHSAA 3-AA state championship game.
Last season, South Johnston finished wish an 8-5 record, losing in the second round of the NCHSAA 3-A state playoffs.
The first day of high school football practice in North Carolina is slated for Saturday. The day will begin at 7 a.m., with a closed team meeting in the auxiliary gym for South Johnston players.
South Johnston will open the regular season on Aug. 19, at home against Midway.
