I've been watching MLB and have a really basic question.

I always assumed that players wear spikes from HS to MLB. Sometimes fielders look like they are wearing molded cleats. Mostly it looks like middle inflielders, but I'm not certain. Is it the glare from the lights and they really metal. Or are the white molded plastic. Or do they have a special ceramic type of spikes. Just wondering.

Molded. Much more comfortable than steel, as no pressure points on foot and bottom is able to be build more flexible, so more like a turf or running shoe. Less apt to seriously injure a player of cleat comes in contact with flesh (ie Kinsler coming back hands first into first and Albert coming down on side of hand).

You will see some still wearing steel (esp in outfield for traction in damp grass) but molded makes it easier to plant a foot in the OF wall to get up for a catch without cleat hanging in the wall...

Not as durable as steel, obviously, but when your shoes are being supplied, go for comfort and performance!

    Metal vs molded

Have you seen any pitchers with non-metal?

standing in concrete dugouts on and off a few hours per game has to make your "dogs tired". So does travel/showcase ball for a 4 game weekend (8 hours). I noticed them on some 1st and 3rd baseman also, not just the MIF's.

Shoes have sure changed. I bought my son some basketball shoes this weekend and honestly...you could see right thru them. super light. but i digress.

    way back in the past

Remember "Spot-Bilt" steel cleats back in the day? Solid black with the tan tongue that flipped back over the top of the laces. and a white spot on the back of the shoe.
