Does anyone know if there is a new rule or a rule coming into effect concerning "volunteer" coaches. From what I understand volunteer coaches will no longer be allowed unless they are employed by the school system. I know this could potentially affect a lot of HS programs if this is true. I feel that would be a shame to kill such a valuable resource of knowledge not just in softball but in all sports. I have never been a fan of parents being HS coaches when their kid is playing but there is a vast amount of knowledge out there that won't get tapped in to.

I have been a volunteer coach at a HS since 1998. There was no mention of it at the July nchsaa meeting nor any word of it from my AD
SO I would say it is just another Rumor.

If that happens the schools may be surprised when they cannot find a coach. I know of two SW4a schools that have non staff Head coaches this season for softball and one that could not find a head coach and all are strong programs.

At least one county I know doesn't allow parents of players to coach. Of course, they can coach outside of school.

Without volunteer coaches many programs wouldn't make it. Without the help of coaches outside the schools most kids wouldn't have the instruction to learn the necessary skills.

The more involved the kids are outside of school the better the teams.

Such a rule is a local school board decision. Some allow volunteers but require them to submit an employment application. They then do the background checks, criminal record checks, etc., just like any regular school system employee. They just don't get a pay check.

What is the issue with volunteer coaches?(assuming background checks are made). Is it about insurance or control of them?

Oh I have no idea what could have prompted this action. Davidson county does a very thorough background check. I would love to know, but it sounds like it may be a county wide policy.Perhaps coach L can shed some light.

So let's think about this. In counties or districts where they won't allow volunteer coaches do they still allow volunteer teacher assistants or other school volunteers?
