Activities Begin – 2:30 p.m. Game Time - 7:00 p.m.

The South Mecklenburg and Cox Mill baseball programs are teaming up with the University City YMCA to raise funds for The Miracle League. The University City YMCA is organizing The Miracle League to allow children facing serious physical and mental disabilities an opportunity to play baseball. On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, the South Mecklenburg Sabres baseball team will host the Cox Mill Chargers at Sabre Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. but fundraising activities to support The Miracle League will begin at 2:30 p.m. All proceeds from these activities will be used to construct a custom-designed baseball field for The Miracle League. Fundraising activities include a silent auction, raffles for a gas card, baseball gear and apparel, a home run hitting contest, base running contests – and more!

Information about The Miracle League

The Miracle League at the University City YMCA removes the barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime. Since the main barriers for these children arise from the natural grass fields used in conventional youth leagues, the Miracle League teams play on a custom-designed, rubberized turf field that accommodates wheelchairs and other assertive devices while helping to prevent injuries.


The University City YMCA’s Miracle League is expected to break ground this spring and hold the inaugural season this fall. The league will provide a baseball experience to youth and families in and around the Greater Charlotte area. Unfortunately, not all families can afford for their child to participate in an organized youth sports league. The YMCA does not turn anyone away due to the inability to pay and utilizes fundraised dollars to offset the cost of league participation.

Does anyone know who any of the South Meck alumni or other baseball players are that will be participating in the Home Run Derby?

 

If I were a betting man

I'd take Ryan Morris in a heartbeat. Big swing and nice lift. and he's still a young guy with some bat speed.

 

It would be good to see him in it. But how much hitting has he done since high school? I think he only pitched in the Minors. Any other names that you know about or would like to see in it?

 

A few suggestions

Boy do i wish I could be in town to watch this event. Two names I personally would like to see partake would be David Rubinstein and Preston Shuey. Both had phenomenal HS careers and excelled in college as well. I'm not sure if either would be available but they would put on a show that I would pay to see. Here's a few other notable big bats that have come through the program: Mike Daniels, Jonathan Ratledge, Chase Austin (older borthers of Logan Ratledge and Brett Austin), Spencer Shuey, Elliot Arrington, and Deuce Wright just to name a few (I know I've left a lot out). I believe that's at least one player from each class between 2002-2009. Regardless of who they get to participate, I'm sure this will be a great event and it couldn't be for a better cause.
