    Hough 9......Ardrey Kell 2

    Hough....000 300 6......9..9..0
    A. Kell....100 000 1......2..5..2

    WP: Brandon Gragilla
    LP: Brad Stone

    Hough hitting:

    Pierce Suttles 3-4, RBI
    Nick Bernardo 2-4, 3 RBI
    Greyson Oxidine 2-4,(2) 2B, RBI

    AK hitting:

    Miles Garner 2-3, 2B

The Hough Huskies made the most of their opportunities and put together 2 big innings in a game that saw them record 15 K's while batting. The AK pitching appeared to be in command, but the Huskies plated three runs with two outs in the 4th inning. Nick Daddio ignited the rally by stealing third and inducing an errant throw from the catcher, hustling home with Hough's first run. A hit batsmen followed by RBI hits by Nick Bernardo and Greyson Oxidine pushed Hough to a 3-1 margin that held until the 7th inning. Brandon Gragilla pitched six strong innings (following a similarly strong outing against Providence), mixing his off speed pitches well with a sneaky fastball. The big lefty appeared to get stronger as the game went on and allowed only three hits in his six innings. Oxidine squelched an AK rally in the bottom of the 6th inning by making a diving stop on a hard shot down the 3rd base line and scampering to the bag to force the runner and end the inning. Hough erupted for 6 runs in the 7th inning to put the game out of reach for the Knights. When the AK pitcher in a bases loaded situation halted his pitch mid-delivery for a balk and a run forced in, you could hear the scattering of helmets in the AK dugout as the game was getting away from the home-standing Knights. The 6-run inning was highlighted by some well placed bunts and Oxidine roping his 2nd double of the game down the left field line. Hough came into the game with a 1-3 record, but played errorless & opportunistic ball in this game to take down an SW4A powerhouse.

Tries to...that may be the rub. Trying to and getting it done are two different things and the Observer has been woeful in covering HS baseball. I see better baseball recaps and features in the weekly papers or the community inserts (Corey Inscoe comes to mind). Just picking at an old sore won't really change anything....I remember this being batted around last year at this time.

Bottom line: I just think that the coverage that does exist is tilted way too far in the direction of Ardrey Kell and Providence (and their high profile coaches) and in the direction of the schools and baseball programs that struggle to even field a team and aren't competitive. Again, I enjoyed the South Meck story this morning.

    South Granville:
Zack Cooper throws 5 innings with 10 Ks. Cooper also hit HR in 1st inning.
Matt Fuhr was 3 for 3 at the plate.

    Cuthbertson HS - 4, Porter Ridge - 2

Cameron Tekker pitched a complete game for the Cavaliers. Andrew Hendel finished the game with 2 RBI's. The pitching has been strong, but the bats really need to start going for this team. Cuthbertson has Sun Valley on Friday night. I'll try and do better job with the players next time.

    Southern Lee 14
    Jack Britt 4

Actually a good, close, ball game, tied at 4 runs a piece entering the 7th inning, then Southern Lee scored 10 runs in top of 7th. Southern Lee now 3-1 on the season, next game at home vs. Western Harnett HS.

be happy with what you get

At least they cover a game or two, here the Raleigh the N&O may put a box score in the paper, every once in a while someone will show up for the mid-town insert and talk about a team, but htat game is ususally 1 week old by the time it gets in there.
