Why dont HS coaches take their team and play during the summer months. Its a great way to keep a team together and coninue to have them scouted or is this already done or against policy. It would be great for players.

There are certain teams in certain leagues that do this. It must be sanctioned by the NCHSAA: Metro League is an example. Otherwise a HS coach can not have more than 8 players from his school that he coaches.

The leagues have had varying success. Raleigh appears to do well, but other areas have not had the competition they had hoped for. However, there is a possible downside to this by coaches insinuating to their players that they need to play for his team in the summer.

Coaches also like to support the local legion programs.

While your player may be in a great situation with an amazing HS baseball coach, It’s a better situation for the HS player if he has the flexibility to choose to play on teams where the coach can be respected for his abilities and is focused on the players rather than his own interests.
Your question presumes the goal of HS coaches is to have his team scouted…..unfortunately, it’s not always the case. It’s not the case that HS coaches will coach in the best interest of his players. It’s also not the case that HS coaches know and can teach fundamentals, isn’t influenced by community politics, is willing to pursue expert advise, or has more than his own ego on the line.
We know of many HS coaches who have held the head coaching position for years. They’ve gone unchecked and unchallenged because the system allows it. What were the qualifications for these guys to become head coach? Maybe they played baseball in HS many years ago. That’s it. But, they have winning HS seasons because they’re the beneficiaries of products from Showcase or Legion ball…leagues where the players pursue “coaches” not “managers” and continue to work on their fundamentals through outside training.
So, for us and many, many players in the area….the season starts when HS baseball ends. True baseball begins on the Showcase field or on the Legion field. Watch the trend from California….many players are opting to skip the HS season all together. They’re opting to use the season to train or to play in some of the early season showcase leagues. Colleges are recognizing the value in this alternative approach. Many have even given up on contacting HS coaches. This is happening here…in NC!
