Johnny is not hitting .500

Poor Johnny

If Johnny is accounting for 3 or 4 of the, we'll say 5-8 hits a game, he's not gonna do a whole lot of scoring with the rest of the team hitting a cool .125. That is unless he steals 4543 bases, or always has a lead off double followed by a sac bunt and some good situational hitting.

If only Johnny was really Bugs Bunny.

Along with this 'hit' he walked and struck out and had a SAC bunt. 1 for 2.

My bet is that this "Johnny" is one of the 50% hitting <.212

 

The biggest contributors to questionable stats are:

1. Improper scoring that is rooted in the official scorer being a biased "homer" or the job has been turned over to someone who doesn't understand what a fielder's choice is, or how to interpret what is an error and what is a hit. Proper scoring is not easy, particularly when it comes to calculating ERA. I even saw in the Observer this morning that a batter for Olympic picked up an RBI on a ball "dropped in the outfield".
2. The high degree of variability in the competition across the area and the state. The SW4A is hard to compare to for most conferences. I would hazard a guess that the batters at Queens Grant are not facing D-1 signees and commits as the SW4A teams do on a regular basis. When Hough scores 30 runs last night against an unprepared opponent, I imagine the Hough players batting averages were favorably affected. Even a routine fly ball to the outfield that is misjudged by an inexperienced player goes in the book as a double or triple. That same struck ball is probably caught in the SW4A and many other conferences.
3. Crazy field dimensions. The fields at Covenant Day (last year), Southlake Christian (300 ft fences all around, incl CF) and others I'm sure, drive unnatural offensive outputs. I was at a game at Southlake Christian last year and the bases were loaded with two outs. The Southlake batter hit a sky high fly ball to CF and the center fielder settled under it and waited for it to come down. When it finally did, it caught the top of the 10' fence and ricocheted toward the infield. Three runners scored and the batter was credited (correctly) with 3 RBIs and a double. Anywhere else that 298' fly ball is an out.

You're exactly right. Of the 13 games in the data 4 were shutouts and 4 of the losing teams scored 1 run. That's 8 of the 13 games where the loser scored an average of 1/2 a run per game.

folks - we are all at the mercy of the "official" scorer here. If you have seen the "official" scorers I have - then you inderstand Johnny's Avg - Or if the Scorer doesnt realy care for Johnny, - Then you understand Johhny's avg.
