Many, many thanks to all the volunteers, coaches, players, and fans that made the 2012 Toxey-Griffin UC Classic a success. We were blessed with wonderful weather, and great opportunity to see a lot of our local teams play at one site. Hope to see many of you all back as the tourney returns to Piedmont HS.
A couple of notes about the tourney:

Weddington was officially crowned champion of this year tournament, as the first tiebreaking criteria was runs allowed. With two shutouts in the first two games, and just giving up the one run, they sealed the deal. Marvin Ridge looked outstanding going 3-0, and Sun Valley finished a furious comeback vs Piedmont to win 11-10, to also go 3-0.

The tourney pitted four SCC teams vs. 3 RRC and 1 SPC team. SCC teams were a combined 11-1.

Andrew Bostic of Weddington was named the tournament MVP, having outstanding performances on the mound, as well as at the plate. I don't have all the numbers, but I know he struck out 10 in 5IP, and connected on 2 HRs, while being plunked at least 3 times. Congrats to young Mr. Bostic.

Finally, the last game of the tourney provided enough drama to carry us to the 2013 event. Piedmont came out red-hot, connecting on hit after hit, and capitalized on some SV miscues to take a 9-1 lead into the sixth. Sun Valley finally started to hit in the sixth. After a couple hits to plate one run, Jordan Watts hit a monster 3 run HR to cut the lead to 9-5. Several batters later, SV had cut the lead to 9-8, with a runner at third and still just one out. On a fly ball hit back of second base, that the second baseman caught running away from the infield, SV tried to tag and score, but were thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Piedmont responded with a run of their own in the top of the seventh making it 10-8. Will Holmes and Kenny Palmer started the bottom of the seventh inning with back to back singles. Jordan Watts then reached on a two base throwing error, plating Holmes and cutting the lead to 10-9, with runners at 2nd and 3rd. Ryan Smith was then plunked to load the bases, still with no out. After a strikeout, Travis Cochran smacked a ball into the right centerfield gap plating the tying and winning runs.
