Northwest Cabarrus pitcher Weston Smith has committed to UNCC to play his college ball. Congrats to him, the niners definitely got a hidden gem with this kid.

Congrats to Weston, very deserving. Hes a fine pitcher and fine young man. Good family (well except dads a little ugly). Seriously I wish Weston the very best.

Congrats to Weston as well. It's great to see another local kid getting the chance to play at the next level.

Baseball is a year-round sport. Northwest's Coach, Joe Hubbard says that Weston has always played football in the fall and has never prepared or played baseball year-round. He also says that coming into the season Weston has always been prepared good enough to be a good High School pitcher despite not playing/preparing yearly. Hubbard goes on to say that when Weston gets solely focused on baseball, he can/will be scary good. I believe he is correct and I can't wait to see how young Weston's college career unfolds.

Actually, being a two sport player will serve him well in the future....and one thing about football/baseball players; college coaches love
'em. They are strong guys physically and mentally. Plus, if he is a pitcher with limited innings due to football, he has a greater chance of staying healthy(arm-wise) in college.

Very true, Smith has always seemed to have a healthy enough arm to go 7 most games. But don't you think he will benefit greatly when he gets where he doesn't have to transition from sport to sport and focus on baseball from here on out?
