Unusual "you make the call" from this weekend

This was a new one to me. Runner on 3rd - 2 outs. Softly hit ground ball down 1st base line. First base field the ball and waits for batter to run into tag. Runner from 3rd crosses home plate before tag is applied. Umpire says run counts. Is there any circumstances where this could be the correct call? Site tournament director was called over and agreed with the umpire. Then the sanctioning body tournament director was called on the phone, and after a long discussion with the umpire, the call was changed. Right or wrong?

 

Uneducated assumption. If she had stepped on bag run does not count regardless. By waiting to make a tag it changes the entire situation. Run counts.

 

First base did not step on bag. She waited for batter to reach her between the plate and 1st.

Since the batter/runner never made it to first, the run should not count.

As soon as the defender is standing with the ball to make the tag the inning is pretty much over.

 

Correct. Here's the ASA ruling. "No run shall score if the third out of the inning is the result of a batter-runner being called out prior to reaching first base"

The only way I see that the run scoring is if the umpire ruled the batter/runner was obstructed with prior to the tag......e.g. slow roller, pitcher misses the ball, stumbles, collides with the batter/runner, the first baseman then fields the ball and tags out the batter/runner.

 

Slick. How does waiting to make the tag change the situation? Is there a rule reference you are using? It was an USSSA santioned tournament in Clayton (Cleveland)

 

3rd out is a force out regardless of whether or not she tagged the girl or the bag. Run doesn't count in any situation here.

Actually the third out was not a force out. The batter cannot force themselves to advance. The batter may only force other runners to advance as a result of becoming a batter-runner. The third out was made on the batter-runner before reaching first base, which negates any runs on the play. That is why there is a specific rule for this situation.
