UNCG Coach Mike Gaski Fired

Didn't UNC go to the CWS on a predominately North Carolina roster? Haven't they been a national power the last 5 years using predominately NC players? I think it can work at other NC schools too

 

Their NCAA Championship teams featured 7 of 8 position players from NC, and three top starters featured two from Charlotte (Bard and Woodard.)

If you are looking for a coach with National connections...look no further than Mike Shildt of the Cardinals. A former HC and assistant in college, this man knows every bonafide player in the country---it's his job to know them. There, I let one name out of the bag. He's done it well at every conceivable level and there is absolutely no one that is better at teaching the game.

I could go on and on about his credentials, but it would only matter to the AD.

 

Absolutely support Mike Shildt. Can coach, evaluate talent, has connections, will out coach teams with better talent, and will motivate and hold players accountable as well as anyone. Players will represent the school on and off the field in and out of the classroom par none. Mike's way of love and respect for the game, school, family blow people away. Would be the biggest steal for a school imaginable. This is a get well quick card "if" the AD will make the move. BTW who is Ricard?

 

The question about winning big with NC kids at UNC is true. Quite honestly the NC kids at State are having a similar effect for them.

 

If you honestly think UNCG is going to get the cream of the crop with NC high school kids and then compare that to the instate recruiting at UNC, ECU, or NC state then you're crazy. Every 5 or 10 years UNCG will get a Gordon or Mason, but don't count on it. You need national connections to get the midwest, west coast JUCO and northern high school players that want to come south and play right away. They will pass on the big Northern schools for these reasons. BTW, Mike Rikard is a national crosschecker for the Red Sox, played at UNCG, coached at Wake, Elon, Cape, and Coastal Plains league.

I happen to side with those that think a team can be successful with more NC players signed. Based on the scholarship money and the way it is handled with regard to in-state and out-of-state signees, a program is going to have to really look closer at in-state athletes. The State Legislature now makes the colleges pay based on in-state or out-of-state tuition. Used to be everyone was rated on in-state tuition and made sense to look everywhere for talent. I still think we (UNCG) missed the boat on some really good players that were in-state and wanted to play at the school. Rather than dwell on why some chose not to play at UNCG, I think given the right candidate that these NC players in the future will reevaluate where the best fit for them might be.

I will say this...UNCG fan thinks UNCG would be "crazy" to think that in-state recruits could make them a respectable program. Well then App. State must be frickin' nuts because their roster this year had 28 NC players (not counting 3 NC players on redshirt), 3 Fla., 2 SC, 2 Ga. and they seemed to play some decent ball with a 41-18 record! I think we could use some of that kind of crazy!!!

 

I obviously have a vested interest in UNCG recruiting NC kids since

A. I am a baseball alum at UNCG
B. Live in NC
C. Want the program to be great

But, it is going to take time to build the program. Why not cast a larger net and get the best kids/students no matter where they live? South Carolina, Virgina and other surrounding states have very talented kids, too. If App State, Elon, and other Mid-major schools are competitive now then the pickings are going to be slimmer. I'm sure the AD is going to offer someone with NC ties as well as national connections.

 

I was a 4 year starter for Gaski, haven't been back to see one game or attend any of the alumni events since my final game. Empty promises are what kept me away!

 

Doesn't seem alot of action or names associated with the opening. Either AD is doing a great job behind the scenes, not alot of interest from the people they want to have interest from, trying to get administration support in head coach AND assistant salaries to par, or some of us are over valuing the job and its potential. There seems to be no information on Greensboro area outlets, anyone have a clue as to where this currently sits?
