    Clarification????

It has been stated on here that there is a mandatory 30 day wait time from time of posting for announcement of a hire.

    Is that true or false?????

If true, that would explain the delay (possibly).

Does anyone know the answer 100%? If so, where is the chapter/verse???

I believe that's true as it applies to all state job postings. However, Gaski was released back in May, so I assume it's been longer than 30 days.

I know this for sure---no coach has been interviewed, so bringing up names of candidates is speculation at best. Link Jarret is a strong candidate and he is no longer interested in App St., so we'll see......... However, I selfishly support another stroooooooong candidate...and I hope he at least gets to interview.

This is what i could find on that but not 100% sure it is what was looking for.

"When a vacancy is listed with the Employment Security Commission, the listing agency may not fill the job opening for at least 21 days after the listing has been filed, and the local office with which the listing is made must be notified by the agency within 15 days after the vacancy is filled. Upon agency request, the Employment Security Commission may waive the waiting period for filling listed vacancies in position classifications for which the State Personnel Commission has recognized that candidates are in short supply and it hinders the agency in providing essential services." from OSP Portal

Its been more than 21 or 30 days anyway but that still does not mean you can not interview anyone just means you can not make the hire official. Does anyone know if UNCG has even brought anyone in to interview?

I am new to the board but have been following all the comments for the past couple weeks. I do have some first hand insight into this search though...

I do not think that the "waiting period" has much to do with the delay of this search. It is my understanding that it is more of the administration trying to put all the pieces together to make the hire. The last known salary for Gaski was for the 2010 season and it was roughly $61,000 in base pay. There may or may not be any additional perks added to it such as a car or performance incentives.

That salary is well below what other head coaches in the SoCon make. CofC makes $100,000, Citadel over $100,000, App St close to $90,000, Western Carolina $95,000...not sure about Kennedy at Elon or Hennon at Georgia Southern but I would assume they are both at or close to that $100k mark as well. These are the best programs in the conference over the past 5-10 years. As for assistants I would assume that their pay is well below the league leaders as well.

Point being is that to really invest and make the job and program successful the administration must put together a good package. That sometimes take time especially when you consider the state of our economy. The AD probably has to gather all the information from others around the league and then make a recommendation to the University President. They not only have to invest in the coaching salaries but also make sure that the scholarship and recruiting budgets are at a level that will allow the new staff to do what they need to in order to turn it around.

As has been stated on here there have not been any interviews and I'm sure those on the committee are somewhat in the dark but this search is moving forward now. The way that I understand it they are going to bring in a rather large number of candidates (maybe 5-8) starting this weekend and finishing up on Monday. From that group they will narrow it down to a select few (2-3) and bring them back for a second interview in the middle of next week. Once that is completed then they will make a hire, probably by the end of the week.

I really don't know any names of the candidates but I'm sure all the names thrown around are being considered for one reason or another. With that initial number being so large it will probably be a mixture of coaches from big program assistants, to assistants at the most successful SoCon programs, to small local small college head coaches.

As for the recruiting part....all these coaches are out recruiting right now. The big school assistants recruit both regionally and nationally so whoever is hire will have an immediate list to start pulling from. Many HS players do make their commitments in the summer but there are still hundreds of players that are open. It is not out of the question that one week the coach calls from school X and the next is calling the same kids from school Y. I don't think that waiting this long will have too much of an impact on the recruiting. Plus all junior college recruiting doesn't even happen until the fall so what they lack in HS commitments to fill area's of need they can go that route if they choose too.

At the end of the day I feel that Link Jarrett is the front runner like many suggest. He fits all the criteria and does have ties to the AD being a Florida State guy. Unless he just tanks his interview or one of the other guys blows them away I think that he has the leg up on everyone.

Most informative post yet! Thanks UNCtiger for taking the time to inform us. I believe you are 100% correct in your statements.

Although Link Jarret would be an excellent choice, I hope that "my" coach is on the short list to be interviewed. I believe he is the type coach that will blow them away in an interview. With HC experience, a respected associate HC in an "elite" conference, and a strong connection with HS coaches across our state, this candidate has the "wow" factor not always seen in coaches.

unctiger- I do have a question for you. If they are looking to bring in candidates this weekend, it's going to be a little difficult for many of them. Most are out, all over the country, recruiting players for their respective schools. It's going to be hard for them to make arrangements to get into Greensboro by the weekend, if they are in East Bugtussel, Maine.

Are they doing phone interviews with some of the intial candidates?
