    Cape Cod,CPL, Great Lakes, etc.

If you have to ask what the purpose of the SCBL is then you would have to question the purpose of the Cape Cod leagues, Coastal Plain League and any other wooden bat summer collegiate league. I am honestly not sure if this is a legit question. I think no matter what response anyone writes you are going to bang on the league or leagues like it in some form so why don't we skip the BS and just let us know what your gripe is......

It is a way for college kids from all over the country to travel to areas that they might not otherwise be able to play in and play against other Div I,II,III and JuCo Players. It makes them better as players and gets them seen by other colleges (in JuCo's cases) and also by MLB scouts within those different areas of the country. Players from the South go North, West to East etc. You get a really true feel for how good hitters and pitchers are when you make them play with wood. It gives the players a true idea of how good they might be in the minor leagues as hitters and lets them know what they have to work on to make them better to get to that point of begin drafted. Between 40-50 games are played in about 2 months and it is an awesome experience for all parties involved and I personally am thankful that we have that sort of ball being played in the Carolinas.

I wanted to stay out of this thread and let others participate. AND, east99 did a great job in answering. I, too, was not sure where the thread was headed.

I would also like to add that most college programs have 35+ players on their roster. You can safely assume many quality players did not get the playing time, due to many reasons, that he wished. Summer college baseball allows him to improve the skills he already has and develop other areas to improve (most are suggested by their college coach) that will help him in the fall.

What is sad is that most summer college baseball organizations have a deep waiting list of players hoping to play. So the concern is that there is not enough teams or leagues that can come close to fill all the requests for players to participate. Just look at the number of colleges, D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and Juco, in this state alone. There may not be enough summer teams across the country that could accept every college player in just our state---nevermind across the country.

Is playing summer college baseball a must? Heavens no....but it can be the best experience the player may ever have. The relationships built with host families are, in many cases, life long friends. The relationships built with teammates that live all across the U.S. is a great experience that will always be cherished. It such a cool experience to play summer ball....and most seem to enjoy it immensely.

Per Braves..."Summer college baseball allows him to improve the skills he already has and develop other areas to improve (most are suggested by their college coach) that will help him in the fall."

I know some pitchers will only go for a brief amount of time to work on a few more things. A few of them I know only made 4 starts in the Cape Cod league and then called it a summer. Their coach only wanted them to fill out their pitch count for the year. For others, it's working on that 3rd pitch in their arsenal.
