    Ego vs Humility

It is indeed a mystery. The thread began with an innocent link to recognize some talented men who have earned the privilege of continuing their baseball career at the college level.

That is where it should remain - a celebration of accomplishment by the PLAYERS who have earned the chance to compete in college baseball.

I'm not sure if the thread title with the word Dirtbags in it caused the anxiety or if it was the jealousy of those not on the list --- but I am absolutely not surprised that the thread turned to crap on the first reply.

It does not matter where they went to school, for whom they played, or how they got recognition. It does not matter whether they played showcase, high school, legion, AAU or sandlot. It does not matter if they are going to a school that over-recruits (whatever that means) or is community college.

What matters is one simple fact - these fortunate young men have all been extended a chance to earn a spot on a college baseball team and continue a dream.

What causes the angst? Simple, it is the ego of the adult(s) associated with the kid.

Ask any one of the hundreds of players who have committed and you won't hear "I got recognized because I was a _________." You will hear a level of appreciation and excitement to have the chance to prove he is worthy of a spot on the team and proudly wear the logo of his school.

I don't believe there is one mention of any of the deserving young men about whom the post was intended who have been mentioned on any of these replies. What does that tell you?

How many associations, teams and organizations have died because egotistical personalities destroyed the basic values the organization was designed to promote. Each of you can fill in the blank with the name of the organization that died - then reflect on the root cause - and there you find the answer to the question of why this thread went down a predictible path.

There are so many talented players in the state, so many talented coaches in the state, and so many good people who love the game and work hard to promote it in the state. With so many good things going, why do we seem to work so hard to tear it down.

Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

You are so right! The young men that have committed should be honored. I am at fault for getting off the subject and I am honored to know some of the young men on all the show case sites.I hope Preston and the family are all good! I will always miss the good days and hope our sons have a great future ahead of them!

    Benefit Question on NCAA

I keep hearing about cost and scholarships for showcase. I have heard some pay some don,t? Help me understand why NCAA rules are not being broken. If every player on Showcase teams do not receive the same benefits, food housing, pay the same to play why is this not a benefit against NCAA Bylaws? Considering the head of the organization gets deals using the University fields and has coaches ear that HS coaches don't have.

When a prospective student athlete receives a benefit from anybody, two questions have to be considered:
    1) Is his amateur standing affected? (Article 12)
    2) Does the benefit induce him to attend a particular college? (13.2)

Costs associated with showcase (or participation on a travel team, instruction at a baseball academy, pro tryout, etc) can be waived without making the player a professional. He just can't be compensated more than actual expenses.

Showcases expose the player to multiple schools and if anything broaden a player's horizons rather than induce him to a particular college. On the other hand, a college camp must not waive fees, because that could be an inducement to attend that school.

(When I struggled to say what you read here as succinctly as I liked, I turned to the High School Baseball Web's resident expert on NCAA regulations, "3fingeredglove." Kudos and thanks to him for the assist!)

    [QUOTE

    [/QUOTE]

We've disagreed before... we've made up and been respectful... however, if "it doesn't matter where..." as the quote says, well, then how do you address the title of the thread? The title seems to make the where/how they "got" (through Dirtbags here) what matters - or am I reading it wrong? (This could just be a hang-up with semantics or grammar on my part - I took it wrong.)

As a reminder, my oldest is only 8 and has played NO organized baseball (say what!), so I've not been scorned by anyone.

Also, I previously apologized for any wrong toward any of the listed players - not my intent. But if it was even perceived that way, then I still owe apology.

Finally - and I mean no personal attack BDD, as we surely come across different players in different areas I'm sure) - I definitely have heard teenage players talk about "being a ________" (fill in organization), in terms of how it has made a difference - no the difference for them. Sadly, some speak quite arrogantly about it. Further, one HS coach who was a State Games region head coach expressed to me how he was extremely upset with one player from his team who showed up at scout day with his "showcase" hat on instead of his HS hat. Maybe the coach was too demanding, but he had communicated to ALL players on his region team to wear a specific color pant and their school hat. Now I know it was only ONE kid, and he doesn't represent a whole showcase organization and it's attitude/demeanor, but that ONE kid wore a different color pant and his "showcase" team hat. His wearing that hat, to the SG coach and me, was a statement of," hey, notice I'm a _______, and therefore must be good." And as I've said before, in terms of the recognition factor, these teams do absolutely come through. That I will admit; and those there looking/scouting would have definitely recognized his hat.

Oh - there I went again.
Did I mention my kids are homeschooled - and don't play organized ball?

My wife just told me to," stop posting on that board!" so I'm done again. How many of you love and appreciate her right about now?

It is a marketing game. But it can be done without showcase. There will still be expense, but the college camp route can pay off. We have found out from this board that the Powerade State Games will help and the board was definitely correct. That exposure was the best. Another way to get attention is GRADES. Aplayer with grades, good grades gets a look. It doesnt have to be about showcase.

    I call BULLJIVE!

I just looked at when this thread was started (July 11) and then happened to check the post date for the 3-4 threads a couple below announcing young men's commitments to various colleges. DUH - they were July 5 and July 10 - and all for "SCP" players. This thread was just in response to those that had been posted about SCP players.

Guys, forget arguing anything else with me about this area. This all started as, well, I'll just say I now agree with Baylee's "vanity" commentary. I can't believe I missed the point of the original post on this thread. It was to show," hey, make sure you see our guys are committed too!"

I feel dumb for missing it to begin with - and I am disgusted in the whole group even more because of the underlying point that it was obviously originally done for.

Why couldn't you have just let those few guys that were honored be honored? Why did it have to become a," hey! Wait a minute. We got guys committed too!"?

Well, at least my point about arrogance is definitely proven! Or can someone deny that now?

    Bulljive...
