First...one of the reason's this board rock's created this thread for American Legion fans was because their was a lot of smack talk going on during the playoffs and state tournaments.

Second...Caldwell and Cherryville have had a fierce rivalry for years and I don't think you understand the competitive nature of these two teams when they meet on the baseball field. Caldwell loves to see Cherryville coming to town... it is playoff atmosphere everytime we meet. The kids talk smack to each other (use to anyway)...the coaches are matching their wit's with each other like a chess match ...and the fans (both Caldwell and Cherryville) are not shy about getting after each other.

Third...Caldwell has also had a fierce rivalry with Shelby, Rutherford, and Taylorville in the past. That's the reason that I singled them out in a earlier post. I have a lot of respect for these programs...that's the reason I brought them up as examples...they have good programs

Fourth...I've been to games where player's, coaches, fan's from all teams mentioned above, behave in a way that will not win a merit for sportsmanship. It makes for a great rivalry....Do things get out of hand? Somtimes they do...Caldwell is guilty but so are a lot of other programs

Don't know why I took the time to try and explain this but thought I would try. Caldwell and their Coaches, players, fans are good people that would give you the shirt right off their back if needed....But not on a baseball field and certainly not with Cherryville, Shelby, Rutherford, Taylorsville while on the baseball field....But when we get to the gate...the game is over... that includes Cherryville, Shelby, Rutherford, Taylorville.

My apologies for carrying this to far and letting it get out of hand...

    Great tournament...Lets move on

Damn...I'm glad I not running for public office...that was hard...I may never do that again...you better frame it folks...hell smile people...everything will be alright and the sun will be shining again soon

BTW chrismac...ask that Georgia catcher what the cherryville player said about his mother...then you will have the rest of the story

I believe you A Non Nen Mous........Cherryville is known to get under other team's skin for sure. I don't doubt that one bit. I just find that throwing baseball (in a baseball game) to somebody's back on purpose is uncalled for regardless of the situation.

I leave it at that and hope we will have a better tournament next year! Where is it going to be at?

I'm going to frame it. For those that have not followed Legion baseball for a long time, you just won't understand. CM nailed it when it comes to the fans from the areas he mentioned. On the field they hate each other. They don't bother with political correctness...heck, some of them can't spell it. But what you will find after the game is over, if you need a ride because your car broke down; you need a meal because you left your wallet, or you need someone with a kind word because you're in the dumps...well, they will give you that plus more....and they won't even know you!

Next year's state tourney is in beautiful, laid back, peaceful.. Wilson, NC. The heart of Eastern NC. BBQ is Vinegar based and Stretchy makes sure his umpires never miss a call. Life's good.

But seriously, Fleming Stadium in Wilson is a perfect place for the Legion State Tournament. Historic as you can get. And the BBQ is pretty good too..

Look forward to seeing any of u guys in Wilson next year. Plan on making the trip again.

With all my PC training, I can not condemn Cherryville for taking up for their teammates last year. In fact, I applaud it & I'm not remotely a fan. That's old school take up for your buddy. The same mentality that once made this country great & proud. The kid who threw the ball in the back of the Cherryville player appeared to be unprevoked and there is nothing wrong with having somebody's back & especially your friend. Bad sportsmanship is very evident at times with some programs, but this instance should not be included. Tough for those kids to swallow, but I stick to my view that they did the right thing.

It's been almost a year since that mess happened and you're the first one I know of who has made this allegation, and that includes the people from Georgia. Who told you this?

It is easy to get emotional and get riled up after someone say something to you pretty offensive. It takes a real man to swallow "pride" and move on to play the game without throwing ball to someone's back. It is only words and those kids are between 17 to 19 years old.

You gotta remember, if you fight and other players leave the bench to join the fight , whole team will not get the right to play for American Legion Ball World Series berth. Douglasville catcher is WRONG no matter what Cherryville said to him!!!!

By the way guys...........that is enough on that subject.............I think that stadium at Wilson is going to be pretty neat and all those good BBQ nearby is going to be hard to pass up. Parker's BBQ and Bill's BBQ are pretty darn good!

I went there few years ago and it was mighty good. I saw Little League state games being played at Gillette Athletic Complex ....It was unreal. Those 11-12 years old baseball players were astounded how fancy that ball park is!!!! It was first class and glad all 8 teams get to play in that stadium!
