The NCHSAA has decided to force high schools into two mandatory dead periods during the month of July. High school coaches will not be allowed to work with any player(s) during the week of July 4th or the third week in July (the NCCA coaching clinc). This will effect any high school head coach or assistant coaching their players during the summer on any team.

In western NC this could have a major impact on Legion teams. Many Legion teams start their playoffs about this time. In the east over 70 schools participate in the Central Carolina Summer League. Almost every team is coached by the high school's coaches. This could also effect some travel/showcase teams as well.

From discussions with the NCHSAA, several football coaches complained they were getting behind because they took those two weeks off and others did not. Also head of the NCCA asked for the clinic week to be dead.
Another reason - they felt athletes needed a break.

THIS IS NOT RIGHT! For years the NCHSAA had not regulated summer activities. Now without asking the coaches across the state, we have been floored by this decision.

All a good coach wants to do is to make his players and team better. If certain coaches want to vacation and spend a week in Greensboro playing golf or whatever then let them.

If a young player wants to get better, we tell them they will have to put the work in the off-season. In baseball dedicated kids want to play in the summer. Don't take away the off-season. I would rather have young people playing a sport 3-4 times aweek than getting into some other things.

If anyone feels similair let the NCHSAA know.

I'm sure they have some well thought out reason for doing this or not, but IMO that's about one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

A lot of young men only get 4 years of baseball so let them play. This is the best times of a players life and somebody wants to take this away from them! People are always worried about themselves and not the players that it effects! Let things be and let coaches who love the game coach! A coach who is willing to take his time to make a player better should be able to!

Can you provide a link to that rule?

I searched the NCHSAA website, but didn't find the ruling you mentioned. Can you point the way, so I can read it for myself? Thanks.

From my understanding, it's under further "discussion" on whether this is going to go through or not. The NCHSAA board approved it and then got flack about it and then they decided they should "discuss" this after the uproar of coaches! I know many coaches are not happy about this, especially the baseball coaches in the area!

    they met

Was informed by members of the NCHSAA staff, they did meet again due to the complaints of the baseball coaches. Their outcome was the same - "No change." Two dead periods in July.

How does it hurt Legion ball? Sounds like if this rule is enforced, it would strengthen Legion ball.

They have HS Coaches with their own players on the team. Dead period means no coaching those players.

Been around Legion ball a long time and I've always thought that Legion coaches could not coach their own school players. I could be wrong though.
