Anyone know what happened or Forfeit to who in the finals. Heard that anytime a bid gets passed from one team to another it must be a clear winner. Seems that 2 folks with not so good of a past, put together a deal that may not hold up?????????????

Carolina Cobras - Blackwelder went undefeated this past weekend and won the 16u ASA State title. The Cobras turned down the bid for nationals in California so it dropped down to Lady Lightning Gold - Glosson.

Thanks for the info. I heard the Cobras beat the 14U team from the LLG. Then never played the 16U team from the LLG for the legit State Championship. Gossip word is that a forfiet was agreed on between LLG Coach and the Short guy from Alexander without the Directors consent. Don't know what happened but nothing would suprise me from those two guys.

Not playing out the full tournament is fairly common in qualification tournaments, especially when teams are entered that won't be accepting the birth(s) awarded. In fact, most play end once the birth is decided.

Last week at the ASA Gold Region 4 qualifier in Spartenburg, there were 2 births awarded. In the one birth game, the one team that wasn't going to go to the ASA Gold Nationals anyway, forfeited the game. In the other birth game, since one of the teams wasn't going to the ASA Gold Nationals, the coaches decided to go ahead and play the game but under showcase rules to get their players ABs.

The Corbas objective was to win the tournament. They weren't going to the ASA Nationals. The LLG's objective was to win a birth to the ASA Nationals, winning the tournament was only a means to the end goal (gaining the birth).

In short, this kind of an ending is not uncommon at all.

Sounds like a good way to avoid unnecessary competition. After all, why waste the energy just to see if you can win? What kind of fun would that be?

This is very common, happened to us (Carolina Curve Fain 14u) at the ASA Qualifier in Burlington a few weeks ago, we lost to a very good Team Georgia Erb, won six games in a row to get back to the finals and after they won the winners bracket final they decided to forfeit the championship being that their were two berths awarded and take the berth which was the sole reason they came to play, very common especially with several hour drive home.

Maybe it's just me, but somehow that doesn't feel right. I wonder what lesson the players get from this?

I'm trying to wean myself from so much softball. This helps. I think it'll be at least as much fun when I'm fishing instead.

    Rule change for next year

Tony Laws, nor myself are much on "awarded championships" by forfiet. NC ASA will institute a state rule in 2014 that will require the NC ASA state championship be played out in all classifications. The berth can be awarded to the 2nd place team if the winner doesn't want it. Championships should be played out, not won by forfiet. The Cobras are a very good team as is the LLG team. We would like a clear winner to represent NC ASA by a clear win.
