New Legion Rules

Jr. Legion will go back to High School rules in 2014.

The rule to not allow college freshmen to compete starting in 2015 has been rescinded. We will not know till late May what the new age eligibility rule might be for 2015.

 

Where did you get the info on college freshman staying as is?

 

I did not say the rule would stay the same as it is, although that is possible. I said it would not be changed as was told would happen in 2015. There will be a birth date attached to eligibility, just not sure what the birth date will be. May move to August 1 for example. This is from National.

 

So, for example and possibly, a kid who is under age 19 or whatever the cutoff age might be on August 1 would still be eligible?

The age limit for Senior Legion may or may not change in 2015. That decision has not been made at this time and will probably be made in May. What birth date will be used is not known. The eligibility will be base on age and not High School eligibility and it may not take effect in 2015.

 

When did this change we have all been told the age limit will change in 2015 , can they not get there facts together again? It has even been listed on the national web site and talked about in area meetings.

 

The 2014 American Legion Baseball season gets underway Jan. 1 with new rules for all junior teams that departments may elect to adopt. Coaches and department baseball chairman voiced their ideas for possible rule changes in a recent Legion Baseball survey, and the Legion Baseball Subcommittee and National Americanism Commission listened.
The three rule changes that will be in the 2014 Legion Baseball Rule Book are:
Rule 1 E. Courtesy runners. Teams have the option to use a courtesy runner for the pitcher or catcher at any time. For speed-up purposes, it is recommended that the courtesy runner be used with two men out in all games.
Rule 1 G. Designated hitter. A hitter may be (not mandatory) designated for any one starting player (not just pitchers) and all subsequent substitutes for that player in the game. A starting defensive player cannot be listed as the designated hitter in the starting lineup. A designated hitter for said player shall be selected prior to the start of the game, and his name shall be included on the lineup cards presented to the umpire-in-chief and to the official scorer. Failure to declare a designated hitter prior to the game precludes the use of a designated hitter in that game.​

Rule 1 Q: Re-entry. Any of the starting players, with the exception of the pitcher and the designated hitter, may withdraw from the game and re-enter once, provided such players occupy the same batting position whenever they re-enter the lineup. Starting pitchers and designated hitters that change positions later in the same game are NOT eligible to re-en

I'm a high school guy - not legion or a showcase - though I would admit the Legion format is preferable to me.

But here is where (OK maybe only one place) Legion kicks itself.

Playing college guys takes up roster space: a space that keeps a high school kid from playing, or knocks him down to JR team as a rising senior. That all plays into pushing 14-17 year olds toward showcase/travel. I have coached HS players who were all-conference as juniors, but then sat the bench in Legion to a college freshman - rightfully so at times because of talent level - but the next summer season the HS kid jumps to showcase/travel where he won't sit behind a college guy. Or I've had a 9th grader hit .400 on JV against sophomores, but then get put on a JR Leg "B" team with 8th graders as part of the whole college player trickle-down effect. He jumps ship later too. [Or kids never get on the Legion boat...] Then Legion folks get upset about," why don't kids come to (and stay in) our program? We're truer, better baseball format..." Well, let college guys go play with college teams, and open those roster spots for HS players. Then JR teams can be real JR teams (9th and 10th) instead of bad MS ball with 8th graders on "B" teams and "A" JR teams being 10th and 11th graders playing too low a level of competition.

Just my thoughts. That and a quarter will get you...... NOT MUCH!
