    Hard hit ball to short stop, knocks shortstop's glove off, she buckles, ball ricochets over to third. Third picks up ball, attempts to make play on batter, batter arrives (very) safely on first.

    Hit or error? Please provide me with the link to the rule for either answer!

    thanks!

    In light of the below NCAA rule what would be your interpretation:

    Rule 14.2.3 of the NCAA Softball Rules:
    Base Hit:
    A batted ball that permits the batter to reach first base safely because of a fair hit; because a runner is declared out for being hit by a batted ball or because the umpire is hit by a batted ball; or when a fielder attempts to put out a preceding runner but is unsuccessful, although there is no fielding error and the official scorer believes the batter-runner would have reached first base with perfect fielding; when a batter reaches first base safely on a fair ball hit with such force or so slowly that any fielder attempting to make a play has no opportunity to do so. A hit shall be scored even if the fielder deflects the ball from or cuts off another fielder who could have put out a runner.

    A base hit...

    10.05 Base Hits
    A base hit is a statistic credited to a batter when such batter reaches base safely, as set forth in this Rule 10.05.
    (a) The official scorer shall credit a batter with a base hit when:
    (1) the batter reaches first base (or any succeeding base) safely on a fair ball that settles on the ground, that touches a fence before being touched by a fielder or that clears a fence;
    (2) the batter reaches first base safely on a fair ball hit with such force, or so slowly, that any fielder attempting to make a play with the ball has no opportunity to do so;

    Rule 10.05(a)(2) Comment: The official scorer shall credit a hit if the fielder attempting to handle the ball cannot make a play, even if such fielder deflects the ball from or cuts off another fielder who could have put out a runner.

    Thanks for that confirmation Tom. It makes me crazy when people error an outfielder that runs 30' and dives, completely missing a line drive; when people sac batters when the intent to sac never existed; and when they think if the ball EVER touches a glove it is an error. Pitcher's ERA'S, Batters BA/Slugging/OBP, and a fielder's FA are constantly affected by unknowledgeable stats keepers.

    Unfortunately it continues after high school, the unknowledgeable stats keepers are at the college level too. My girl plays D1 and I've seen it happen too many times...

    have a great day !
