FINAL computer rankings of NC's travel teams (July 15)

    Below are what probably will be the final computer rankings for North Carolina’s travel teams for the spring/summer 2014 season.

    Many teams have begun tryouts for the fall, and others have even disbanded, or merged, or called it a season. There are some tournaments going on through this month, but I won’t have time to input them and doubt they’d have a big impact.

    My goal in this project was to shed light on the number of teams that are actually playing travel ball in NC, and approximately what level each of those teams are playing. That’s valuable for coaches and parents to have a better idea of where their teams and players stand in the bigger picture.

    I also recognize that being a strong team is not the most important thing. If there were an objective way to rank teams based on quality of coaching and sportsmanship, I would do that. The best team for our daughters isn’t necessarily the highest-ranked team. A lot of good work is being done on teams whose W-L records might not be the best.

    For those just tuning in, the rankings are based on results from NC-based tournament organizations – ASA, NSA, USSSA, TopGun, CCS, GotGame. Some results of out-of-state tournaments are included if easy to find or sent to me. N.C. is fortunate that such a high percentage of scores are made available online to make this project practical.

    Hope you’ve enjoyed it. Might do it again next year, but probably would need some volunteers to help keep it going. It was a LOT of work.  But it was fun.

    Final note – I notice that three No. 2-ranked teams have winning records against No. 1-ranked teams.

    What would computer rankings be without some controversy?

    Great to see so many young players getting a head start on travel ball. The top two teams separated themselves – the JC Clippers and the Lady Tigers. The Tigers beat the Clippers in two of three meetings, but the Clippers had a better record against common opponents (specifically the third-ranked Knockouts). The cool thing is that the Tigers had never heard of the JC Clippers until seeing them ranked No. 1 by Aunt Bee. So they traveled some 3.5 hours across the state to find out what they were about. Aunt Bee would like to call the Clippers and the Tigers as her ‘’co-teams of the year’’ in 8U.

    The Green Machine was the most dominant team in any age division this season, but they had a very capable arch-rival in the second-ranked Carolina Attitude. The Green Machine held a 5-3 season edge in that series. The Attitude was the only North Carolina team to score a victory over the Green Machine.

    The Lady Blues are Aunt Bee's final No. 1 team. The Blues had a nice rivalry w/ the No. 2 Cleveland Angels. The Blues beat then two out of three and won two of the three tournaments that both played. The 12U division has the most parity of any division. The top six or seven teams are very competitive with each other. That's not the case in other age divisions, where typically 2-3 teams almost always win the tournaments they enter.

    Three teams separated themselves in the 14U division, and each is considered as much as 2 runs better than any other 14U team in the state. The Cardinals edged Team NC by 0.03 runs. Team NC beat the Cardinals in three of five meetings and did not lose to another NC team, so Aunt Bee’s human poll might give TNC the edge. But also consider the Cardinals are mostly a first-year (2000) team, clearly the best team ‘’their age’’ in the state. The third wheel is the dominant Carolina Wild, who didn’t face either of the top two teams but won every 14U tournament that it entered, plus a couple of high school events, and had several common opponents w/ TNC and the Cards. The Wild was 10-1 vs. top-20 teams in 14U and won 17 straight bracket games to close the year.

    Not enough scores from 16U and 18U events are available to produce the best rankings for this division, especially for the elite teams that play showcase, regional and national events. Aunt Bee is convinced that Team NC Louisville Slugger – which has 13 of its 15 players signed or committed, several to major D-1 schools – is the state’s best team. But its sister team, Team NC 16U, got the top ranking, primarily because there aren’t enough scores for the computer to figure out that the ASA’s 16U division in the Raleigh state championship was not as strong as the 18U division. But suffice to say, Team NC 16U Elite is an awfully strong team as well, and most likely the state’s best 16U team.
