Amazing "Game of the Week" up at Myers Park/Hopewell today....Myers Park @ Hopewell.

This game report is from multiple sources.

2:00 start, Umps show up at 2:30....
    What was a drizzle @ 2 was a light rain @2:30
By 3:00, it was just plain raining
@ 3:15 the field look unplayable to me
@3:45 going into the bottom of the 3rd....you get the picture.

Rob Woodard, MP (03) started for MP, Josh Bush (03) started for Hopwell. Woodard looked good, good movement on his pitches. Very nice pop (87-88 range) on his FB in the rain - he may have touched a little higher, but I doubt it. I really like his mechanics - good use of the lower body, effective repeatable delivery, fundamentally sound. Bush pitched effectively, breaking the barrier of 80 mph on a few pitches - nice little curve.

Both catchers looked very good to me in the rain. They blocked well, moved effectively and both gave good late targets, moving in and out. Dan Woodall (04) was the catcher for Hopewell. The catcher for MP was a red-head, but I didn't catch his name.

Early on, the defenses looked HORRIBLE. 5 errors in the first two innings for MP. Hopewell had 1 error, but the 1B bailed out a throwing error early. Both catchers caught runners early in the game. Hopewell got 1 hit off of Woodard in the first 2 innings, their bats looked a little late. ....and led 3-0, all unearned. Myers Park struggled at the plate early in the game.

Woodard kept his composure, went to pretty much FB and started challenging the hitters (sucessfully I might add). Capps relieved Bush for Hopewell. MP started a comeback and going into the last inning, Hopewell was leading 3-2. Cruse came on to close out the game and MP popped him for 3 runs and the victory.

[Correction made here - my boo boo]Wilson relieved Woodard for MP. My late inning reporter was only interested in results, not details .... sorry .. I had turned into an ice-cube and left by this time, my clothing 3 pounds heavier from the rain.

If you like cold, raining, soggy, sloppy-early baseball, this was the one for you. Both teams settled in and played better but struggled early.

    Final Score: MP 5 - Hopewell 3

West Rowan and Asheboro got their scrimmage game in, but the field was about as soggy as it could be and still be able to get on it with anything other than a boat.

The 2 teams battled to a 9 inning 5-5 tie. Both pitching staffs looked pretty good. Each limiting the other team to only 7 hits. The only extra base hits coming from the bats of Brian Graham and Brian Aycoth, of West, who doubled.

It was really difficult for me to keep up with the players from Asheboro, since the coaches from both teams decided not to wear uniforms in such muddy conditions. I'm afraid that I'm not familiar with the kids at Asheboro and since they batted the whole team and they all wore identical blue sweat suits it only compounded the problem.

Defensively, both teams did a pretty good job, each only made a couple of errors and considering the conditions......... Aycoth continues to do a good job behind the dish for West and I thought that both catchers used by Asheboro were equally effective for them.

I must say that one big surprise for me has been the play of Wade Moore(fr) of West. In the past I have said that I didn't think that he would be ready to play varsity but now, after seeing him play in 2 scrimmage games, I may just have to eat those words. He has played both the OF and hit much better than I thought he would. He has also shown alot more maturity in his failures than he has in the past. He is a rising star that I hope continues to shine.

We are going to add him to our '06 watch list.

Robert Proffitt, North Meck - '06 Varsity catcher.
Wade Moore, West Rowan - '06 Varsity outfielder.

Agree with all of your report about the MP/Hopewell game, NC...except for the fact that Rob Wilson relieved Robert Woodard very effectively (especially considering the horrendous conditions)in the bottom of the 4th for Myers Park. It was during Wilson's time on the mound that Myers Park rallied, so Wilson is credited with the win.

It's too bad that these two talented teams had to go at it in the worst environment imaginable for baseball. Both teams should be credited for playing as hard as they did under the circumstances.

(By the way, I thought of Braves' "Table Boat" in the "For Sale" thread. By the 3rd inning, it would have been an appropriate way for any player to travel to his position.)

Id like to know the umpires were 30 minutes late. Its a shame that they were the cause of the field being worse than it should have been if they had started on time.

Got a note from a TC parent today, said TC just didn't hit the baseball at all. Burwell threw for AC Reynolds. He can be a very effective pitcher at times. Fielder took the loss for TC.

South Meck vs. Watauga @ South @ 3:00

Called off by the umpires at the top of the 3rd inning. Game started out in a drizzle and the conditions and field got worse from there on out. South Meck's staff continuously worked on the pitcher's mound and batting box with quick dry. Both teams were working under increasingly bad weather conditions by the minute. At the top of the 3rd it was Watauga 3 and South Meck 0. Tough luck and a long drive for the Watauga families to be denied a full game. This time last year when South Meck and Watauga played, the sun was shining brightly and spectators were wearing shorts! Its just a gamble when a game is scheduled this time of year!
